Thread: Satin Finish Clear Coat?

I know this sounds paradoxical, but is there such a thing as low gloss clear coat? I am customizing the fuel rail covers on my LS1. They are black plastic with indented Corvette lettering and a black low gloss finish. I plan to fill in the lettering then smooth everything and paint them black again. On top of that I will have vinyl lettering that says Studebaker. I am thinking it would be a good idea to clear coat over the lettering to seal it in place, but I have grown to like the original low gloss finish on the Fuel Rail Covers.

 Advice?

PatOf course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

Most paint manufacturers sell a flattening agent. Pick the one that is compatible with your application. I do believe it reduced the UV resistance of the clear, but in the engine compartment that wont be a problem.

Not all flatteners will work in clear. Some leave little white specks. PPG makes a flattener that is recommended for clear. It is DX-365. You can mix a semi gloss or full-flat. The formula for mixing is on the can or product sheet. I've used it in Urethane clear, and it looks great, but I recommend full-flat, for a more even finish. low gloss is beacuse of fillers, talcs/clays added to increase the pigment/binder (resin) ratio in the paint
for a los gloss clear you would need a soluble filler material
 maybe silica,

perhaps your paint jobber can mx some up

strain it through a filter just in case
