Yup, a good $500 paint job is a laugher!!!!! Been many, many years since that was true. $500 won't even cover the materials......

How true Dave , my buddy spent $5100.00 bucks in material , all PPG .
I thought I was going to have call an EMS unit for him when they told him the cost
    $1200 in K-36 , we primed & block sanded it 4 times
and the rest in sealer , DBU base color and global clear & reducers .
Now he knows what is involved in a $10k & up paint job is all about , he sure hated the block sanding through the courses of sand paper
I felt like I had a little kid in his garage saying " Are we DONE yet " after each finer grit ........ LOL
Heres is his car BTW , I just got done finishing the hood Friday , and installing it today .

Spraytech I agree and I stated that in my first reply. My point was mistaken by others though. A hobbiest can get a factory looking paint job with a $200 gun. I just don't understand someone dishing out $300 'extra' for a factory equivilant paint only to be able to say," I own a top name $500 gun".DUH,,,SO,I can do it for $200! Now someone will say there are no painters getting a factory equivilant look with a $200 gun

Your right , but good equipment does help though . but if a person is only going to use the paint gun once , by all means get the best you can afford or borrow or demo a high dollar gun from a jobber you are purchasing the paint from

Or find a painter by trade to squirt it for you , as a bad paint screw up can be very costly .

I had a helper once that kept on buying the cheap Harbor Freight guns and they all sprayed like crud , after what he spent trying to save money on 3 paint guns could of went to a excellent name brand starter gun !

Yes sir,you know your stuff. The point your making should be first and foremost. Unfortinately there are websites that are leading first time painters to think that they can get a nice looking paint job useing HF guns and Ebay tractor paint.
I have 'no' arguement or dispute with useing the best of equipment or materials. The only point I was trying to make was that the beginer hobbest doesn't need a top of the line Iwata or Sata.
Those that paint for a living should use the best.

FAYLOR , I am not trying to bust your chops or anything , ( sorry if you got the feeling ) .
True only a person thats going to shoot more then 20 cars a year will be better served on the High $ gun, and a hobbyist really doesnt need to spend 500 bucks for a top of the line gun , to get a sufficient job .

But I have yet to see or use a cheapie that sprays like my Iwata or Accuspray and lord knows I have tried many type guns in my 30 year career .

As a hobby painter ... I have the Ingersol-Rand touch-up gun and it works great for me ... for the big gun I have an Astro, and It actually sprays pretty good (MUCH better than the harbor freight one I threw away). My neighbor's Finishline III seems to spray even better than my Astro, Thats why I voted for the Finishline3 ... then again ... I'm no pro ... so thats not saying much either.

So Denny, are you taking sides with me? We could make a great tag team, you paint and I'll tear the off brand tags off the gun

Ok I didn't read all the posts here but I saw the BOY thing one and here is what I have to say AGAIN... I am not being an ass or getting an argument, just trying to explain to you here... What you said in that post you need to read again and then go back and read my previous post. The 500 dollar gun might not make a BETTER PAINT JOB but will make the job EASIER so in turn that means quicker, less wasted material and you can trust the gun your using and if something happens to it all you have to do is call SATA or IWATA and have NO problems with getting another part to fix it (if you take care of the gun like you should then there shouldn't be any problems with a gun). Sure I might be a young BOY as you say but I am not going to give you false information or act like I know what I am talking about, I will only comment on something if I know the answer pretty much 100%.
Hell, I can paint a car with a paintbrush and it might be ok but why do that when I can buy a 500 dollar gun and have a better finish with less sanding and buffing afterwards and less wasted material. Plus imagine if you had a 500 dollar gun... Do you think you will leave it just sitting around and leave paint in it and not clean it? Sure you wouldn't, that's a reason to make you clean it all the time.

Oh and BTW, I am not saying a hobbiest needs to have a 500 dollar gun at all. That's not the argument here (wait lets not call it an argument ) what the whole point here is that you said you cant see why anyone would buy a 500 dollar gun and we are just telling you why someone would that's all.
Spraytech, I know what you mean about the price on materials too and most people dont understand why it costs over 6000 bucks to paint a car and then they want metal flake, pearl, etc and we tell them it costs more and they dont understand. It takes LOTS of materials to paint a vehicle and most of those materials you never see. Please don't mention K36.... PLEASE! It makes my hands hurt just thinking about it.
