    replacing vinal top

     



    I notice rust blisters showing up under the vinal top of my 68 mustang. I pulled the top off and found that there was no paint under the vinal top. It looked like someone had taken a wire wheel and removed 75% of the paint down to bare metal. I have rust everywhere. The pitting is bad in some spots, but has gone through in only one small spot. I'm afraid to try and sand all the pits out because I might remove to much metal. Is it okay to clean the pits out the best I can with a wire brush and then try to neutralize the rust with ospho? I'm thinking of putting another vinal top on. Is it okay to just primer the top and window wells and then put new vinal on?

    It might be ok to do it that way....if you want the rust to come back and continue spreading through the rest of the roof.....I guess it would depend on what your definition of ok is !!!!! The bad spots need to be cut out and replaced with new metal. It's a lot more work, but it's the right way to do it.

    For some reason Ford never put much paint under vinyl tops. My '67 LTD was rusted through in several places. New metal is the way to go, unless you're going to sell it quick.

    The one on my '66 Mustang was the same way except it was padded, what a mess. IMHO, now that you have it off, I'd leave it that way.

    I am getting ready to remove the vynil top from my nova ,any tricks to getting it off?
    just finished a frame off resto mod 67 Chevellewith 383 stroked LT1 and a 75 mb 450 SL (not a hot rod but a sweet old convertable}Now am restoring a 69 Nova SS

    Vinyl tops suck, unless you a body shop. For the bod shops, vinyl tops = lots of buisiness fixing rust. Get rid of it and patch the holes with steel.

    a heat gun and work it up i just ripped mine off with my bare hands you can use paint thinner to work off the glue or paint striper vinal tops are great if you what to start a rust farm i got sick when i took the one off my gto .when i work at the body shops i hated to put 1/4 panles on car with had them on. they were a bicth to get them up with out trashing them
