I've painted many steering assemblies to match interiors. it's basically the same procedure as any other paint job.

first strip down the column. take off/out anything that you don't want painted.

next, scuff the crap out of it. make sure there are no shiny spots. everything should look like it has a satin finish.

spray your color/clear/whatever. i like to do this when i spray the rest of the interior. this makes sure the paint/flake/coverage is exactly the same.

reassemble.
install.
enjoy.
