for the paint guru's

I know it is tough from a picture, does anybody have any idea what color this is, or how he got such fantastic depth to the paint???? That color with white Shelby stripes would be awsome IMO on the Ranchero. Any help????

Dave , it looks like a mid 80's Ford Mid Regatta Blue...........Ford Color Code 3B ........PPG # 3720

This wasn't a base clear color , but it may be cross referenced into a BC/CC from a PPG jobber.

Thanks Tech, appreciate it. I will get a touch of that mixed and see what I end up with. Is there any type of base that will give the color and shine that much depth??? I saw this car in person, the paint was absolutely outstanding and looked to be about a foot deep !!!!!

Most of the depth is from the color itself, and just having the the clear buffed with no peal to it .
some guys will add a candy base intensafier ( in the same shade as your main color ) to help with the deep look.
The trick with extra deep black was adding kandy purple to it , outside on a bright sunny day it was a mile deep .

So I would want to use a candy blue as a base??? I've got so many hours in the tin work allready, not about to cut corners to save a few $$$ on the paint. Sure do appreciate your expertise.

Dave, try HOK SHIMRIN® KANDY BASE COAT (KBC) ( it has pearls and flake mixed in it & comes in alot of flavors)
It covers in 3-4 coats and still has the depth of a true Tri stage kandy,
If you looked at my slide show , my fire wall is kandy purple shimrin base , I used a HOK black pearl for a base just for the depth, which made it into a tri stage.
You could use just a standard base white , or a silver base first , just to have a nice overall base for the shimrin to pop !

Ok, Now I gotcha, Tech. When I get closer to paint time, I would like to defer to you for the materials list. The firewall on your coupe is definitely the look I want. Thanks much for your expertise. I sure do wish I could afford your rate for house calls!!!!! Thanks again for the help.

Take a look at 2005 Mustang, Sonic Blue, very similar though may have just a hint more red to it.............tough to tell with computer reproduction. This won't be a color on the 2006, it's a 2005 deal only.

My uncle's done that, on an old '66 Ecoline he had for a work van at the time.

depth is achieved by getting the finish as clear as possible. the less texture in your top coat the deeper it will look. i use to use thalo blue in my black to give it a darker look. sand, sand ,sand,...buff ,buff,buff.

I would look for a 90's or newer blue , because it will already be a BC/CC mix , and trying to get an old color , crossed over to a B/C may not be done.

I've got my paint guy mixing me up a pint, going to give it a try and see how the color looks. From the chip it looks very close, Thanks a lot for the research, Tech !!!
