newb prep questions

Well I will soon start the process of stripping and prepping my 73 Nova hatch back. I have been doing some reading and I still have some questions. The first thing is due to some peeling I have noticed that my novas black paint job is over its original orange. Is it best to sand to bare metal or rough up the original paint and use that as a base for the primer? What is the best grit to use in the initial sanding process. What is a good sandable primer to use? What is the best way to remove the trim on my car (front/back windshield, hood lip, badges and around the headlights)? I have also been looking at compressors and recs on which to get would be great. Thats about all the questions I have for now but there will probly be more later, any other tips or suggestion you have would be great to hear.

Hi Trenchdog73, well you brought up some good questions that make it obvious your new at this, so for starters I’d have to try and discourage you from taking on such a project without hands-on help from someone with the proper training in handling the materials needed because Iso’s don’t care who they kill, and lead makes for dumb people.

I wish it was that simple to just spit-out the answer but I’m afraid for your safety, sorry.:(

i agree with young blood im 18 and already inhaled the fumes while painting always wear your mask. But i can answer your questions. On the sanding or bare metal i'd say where its peeling sand to metal and feather the rest out i'd say just to be on a safe side use 320 grit, mask it off, then get some 3900s (first kleen) wet a rag and go all over the hatch and wipe off with a dry rag, now spray a self-etching primer and then three-four coats either lacquer primer or uro primer. I prefer lacquer do to easier wet-sanding. on the trim pieces are you wanting to reuse them or get new ones?
