I just finished a car for my wife. Like you I have normally used acrylic enamel and conventional paint equipment, not HVLP. Here in AZ base/clear does not hold up as well as it would in other places especially on cars that live outside. I really wasn't happy with the last couple of cars I had done in Dupont Centari so I talked to the guys at the paint store for suggestions. I ended up going with Nason Ful-Thane urethane.

Using conventional equipment it really went on well and I was very happy with the results. I suspect a clear over it would set it off, and I might have done it if it weren't a daily driver. The cost wasn't that bad, about $350 for 5 quarts of color; 4 Black (I had to do jams inside of the trunk, hood etc and wanted a little left over in case I had to redo something) and 1 qt of silver, the reducer and hardner.

Good luck on yours I'm really looking foward to seeing it done.
