whats up guys.
this is a cool web site. i found it looking for information on rebuilding my Firebird. I have a 69' Bird with a 400 block. Im not sure if i should rebuild my transmission or replace? Any tips you could give for added performance would be appreciated.

Welcome to the boards, I am sure you will enjoy it here. You will get lots of help. Well if the engine and all is stock then first thing you can do is go with a new exhaust system and a set of headers. Then after that do anything you wan't like cam, etc. Others will be putting their input in here shortly to help you out more.
I don,t know what ya going to do with it you can bye one at shucks for $650 or you can rebuild one for $475 and up depending what your going with your car ? Ow almost for got welcome to CHR
It's hard to answer questions without any information. What do you want to do with the car? Are you rebuilding the whole car, the engine, the suspension, the body - or all of that? Is there something wrong with the transmission?Quote:

All depends on what you want the Firechicken to do. With my 79 the 403 was rebuilt with competition pistons cam and heads. put wider tires on the back and redid the paint original platinum. This was a daily driver and the engine was a big mistake rebuilding that way. Too much torque and power, evertime we took off from a stop the littlest acceleration would break the tires loose. this would have been great for a strip car with the power, but not on the street.
So tell us what you want to use it for and what you currently have going and we can help you out some more
Welcome to the club greasy. Sounds like a good project. As for your tranny, i would reccomend either a rebuild if you plan to keep it mild or a t-400 swap if you plan to apply some real power.
Oh, and joker, the 400 and 403 are quite different motors. The 400 is a small bore BB and the 403 is a large bore small block. No, make that a HUGE bore small block. It probably wouldnt be so bad with the 400 due to the longer stroke.

If that is the motor that came in that bird- then it's worth a mint. Those heads are VERY hard to find & well sought after ( have heard of some paying 1500 for a set) . Also- you didn't say if it was a 4 speed or automatic. If it's a 4 speed - then it's a T-10 tranny and it's worth the rebuild, auto then just swap it for same same.

Well, the Bird has the original 400 block in it. I had it remanufactured, and put some headers on it. I plan to put in a Flowmaster exhuast, but thats all thats been done, everything else is basically stock. I wanted to change out the cam and lifters but i dont know much about the ratios I should be lookin for. Its an automatic transmission, but its been sitting so long its struggling. I bought it from the original owners wife. I'd like to keep it strre but id like some horsepower and torque. My buddy been giving me $h!t about his mustang and I'd like to leave it in my rear view. Aside from a paint job its alright. I'll post pics soon.
