    New fro North Carolina

    Hi guy's
Definite amature here, but very willing to get my hands dirty. I just bought a 78 Chevy Scottsdale shortbed 4 x 4 with a 5.7 liter 350, and a TH350 Transmission. The intention for this truck is not for Hot rod, or total restoration for show, but actually to tow a camper for me and my family. I am going to focus on the mechanical components first. Would like to rebuild the TH350 myself (heard they are the best beginner tranny's). Then I am going to work on the drive train (new diff seals and gaskets, and u joints. Once that is complete I will buy a remanufactured motor. I would love some input from you guy's (and gal's) on a set up for this truck. The camper I am going to pull is 5757lbs (rear pull, not gooseneck or fifth wheel). Looking for a balance of fuel economy but enough power and toughness to pull this sucker for years to come. was going to get another rebuilt 350, but I am not apposed to a lager small block. Also not apposed to swapping for a TH400 if this is what is truly best for my needs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the truck is strictly primary for pulling that camper you should consider a 454 swap-----

or probably cheaper overall ( and much better econ $$$$ fuel wise) a late model 5.3 ls---liftout ( complete with accessories and wiring) with a 4l80 od trans--

The truck/suv liftouts are plentiful, cheap, last 100,000s miles, power and mpg great

Welcome from Iowa! I'd definitely look into the LS swap too but if you want to stay simple, a non smog 350 should tow 6k fine. If your truck has 3:08 gears, it may not like to get going though.
