New Here

Hello from California. Just noticed this forum and decided to join. Been out of hot rods and engine building since 1982 and lately have the urge to create another hot rod from the ground up. I'm in the research phase now checking whats available now from what was available then. I havn't kept track of hot rod motor part technology since I got out of it. The last motor I run on the street was a injected, solid roller cammed, naturally asperated 410 cu. in sbc that dynoed 782 h.p. @ 7900 rpm. Looking to build another 410 cu. in. with a bit more h.p. for a 2nd generation Camaro. Pretty much want to build an endurance motor and have decided on a twin turbo set up with tuned port injection. I have alot of catching up to do first.

Glad to hear that you still have the spark! Don't worry about time gone by with new stuff showing up, seems to me that all that has changed is the price!**)

Welcome to CHR! Lots happening in the SBC world with all the new versions from the factory, and lots of aftermarket support for playing with them. Thing is CA seems to be leading the charge against the evil hot rodders, so you have the challenge of building what you want, and then getting it past the bureaucracy of the DMV and emissions rules....

Thanks, glad to be here. I don't see much change in the short block area, but I do see much better cylinder heads, induction and ignition systems now than what was available then.

As I understand it for California now, 1974 and earlier vehicles are exempt from smog regulations in this state and have been for several years.

The old woman that resides with me doesn't like that I've decided to embark on this project but neither did the first wife.

Still have some of the parts and pieces that I can use for a new build like the Barns dry sump set up less the oil tank, the gear drive that the dry sump oil pump bolts to, the Moldex crankshaft, and the Jet connecting rods. Also have the old 292 casting "Bow Tie" angle plug cylinder heads but I'm researching for newer, better designs and going to opt out for something newer. Most everything else over the years I've sold off from that motor.

That much H.P. for the street in a naturally asperated motor was a bitch to drive in stop and go traffic regardless of what rear end gear ratio I had in the car. It idled at 1500 RPM because it was supposed to, had little H.P. below 4200 RPM, and got about 2 MPG if I remember correctly. However when the RPM's got just past 4000 RPM the best way I can describe the acceleration was violent. Kind of miss that feeling.
