Just found this place-willing to lend any gauge knowledge

Hi all
Just came caross this place today. Checked out some threads and looked like a great place to hang out, seemed pretty friendly in these parts.

I have a small gauge business that does custom instruments and we also have a few of our own products that we manufactutre here in Detroit. If you have any instrument or sender related questions, shoot away, I will be more than happy to help. Most of our products came about by encountering problems in a build. We would fond a solutuion and offer it as a product; make a few bucks and offer something that someone else needs. More on that some other time....

My most in progress project is our 35 Chevy master 4-door. Its about 100 hours from driving, I just need to get out in the garage and get to it. It has a Chevy 305, Heidts MII front end, power brakes, power steering and a frod 8.8 w/3.73 LDS and discs in the rear. The project slowed down when we got to the wood in the doors. The 2nd project is a little more complete. Its a 72 Porsche 914 with a Chevy 302. Most people hate it, espescially the Porsche guys, but I love it.

Welcome to the forum. You make instruments? I have recently been appointed to the Club Hot Rod product testing and evaluation center and we require every new member to send us a sampling of their products so we can recommend them. I would like a tach, speedo, and the other 4 usual gauges sent to me asap.;) Ok, I tried anyway..................:o

I like your Chevy and the Porche too. Bet that bowtie made a better performer out of it. :)

Interesting that you do gauge work. I have a question thats been bugging me for some time now....I have restored 63 nova that has the original speedo reading the original mileage...Is it possible to roll back the mileage to the post-rebuild mileage? (approx 3100 miles)

hey welcome ... from MI to . i have a 50 chevy what can you do with the stock gauge /speedo i would like it to work with 12 V fuel oil temp ?

100 hours from driving???:eek: Heck, it takes me 100 hours of sittin' and thinkin' about what part of the car I'm gonna work on next.:LOL:

Most of the gauge work we do is custom. We either customize our own gauges or we do retrofits. Although we do some repair, its mostly our stuff and retrofits; where we put new stuff in an old gauge so it looks old but works.

Hello Mark. I did the same thing to my 41 Stude gauge. I gutted the old gauges and retrofitted them with modern VDO gauges.. Wasn't all that hard just requires alot of patience. I'd like to see some pictures of some of your work. -robert

There are people who contribute regularly to this site who are knowledgeable in every aspect of hot rodding, and your particular area of expertise will fit right in.

That said, you may be just the guy to give me a qualified opinion.

For a long time I have wanted to re-do the instrument panels in both my F100 and my old Dodge. I bought a bunch of after market SW stuff and set out to design decent looking layouts (or copy other people's arrangements) for both vehicles.

Nothing suits me and the instruments themselves just don't look right. They don't look classy enough to suit me.

What I want to find out is this: How big a can of worms would I be opening up if I tried to adapt an entire panel out of, say, an '08 Malibu? I'm talking about the Dodge here. I can handle the installation itself, what concerns me is that I want to retain as much of the "driver information" stuff as I can. Like, you know, average MPG, miles remaining before empty, average speed, even individual tire pressures and all the other poop you get.

Am I asking for a bunch of grief here? I'm not the most adept guy in town when it comes to electrics and it looks like there must be a lot of individual systems to contend with.

Should I forget it?

Those are my sketches, we are actually a design firm. I have some guys doing work for us that are really good, I am an adrquate sketcher. We have the ideas and styling expertise, them we find companies locally that can do engineering and manufacturing for us. It works out very well because everyone warrantys their parts, so we have reat products that look great.

As to the retrofits, most anyone who is knowledgable and paitent can do them, the hard part is the artwork and screen printing.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I was reminded that my wife's high school class reunion (in Pennsylvania) was this past weekend and my presence at that function was to be considered mandatory.

Thanks for explaining why my panel transplant idea is not practical. I had figured as much.

Could I impose on you to send me the dimensions of your larger instruments? I haven't had time to open up the dash to see how much space I have, but I will.

Welcome to the club. That 35 looks great but that little 305 doesn't look right in there. What you need is a 396 or 454 BB. Of course I shouldn't bitch because I have a 305 in my 37.:rolleyes:
