Hello fellow hotrodders!

Please bear with me, as I am new to this whole forum thing! I suppose introductions and history are first on my list...so...here goes.

I'm completely new the the older street rods and hope to get all the information I can hear as well as provide for others any knowledge I have.
I spent most of my youth, as have many of you, pouring through Streetrodder, Hotrod, and other magazines and finding myself inflicted with a sort of disease that drives me toward my dreams of one day completing a street rod of my own. Most of my past has evolved around muscle cars (71 Z28, 71 Chevelle SS, 87 Buick Gran National) but I've always loved the pre-40's cars and trucks. Now its finally my turn.

While I am new to using forums, I'm not new to computers. I work as a network tech (transport and special circuits) for Windstream Communications in Harrison Arkansas. And yes.....I love my job. I'm 39 years old, have two sons ages 13 and 15, divorced after 18 years of putting my family first and my dreams (hot rods) last. My ex's famous last quote "You've been a good provider, but, .......". I'll spare you the rest. Many of you already know. I re-married (a wonderful, encouraging woman), my oldest son lives with us, as he too has 'the disease' (another of my ex's quotes), he also loves old cars. We live in the Ozarks and while I wouldn't concider myself a hillbilly, I am proud of the hillbilly heritage that surrounds me.

I would like to say that I'm really not partial to any make or model (Fords, Chevy's, Pontiac, etc. etc.), it seems that I love them all with little or no favoritism. So, with that said, I'm open to everyone.

I'm just getting started building a 1936 Chevrolet Low Cab truck, and believe me folks.....I have a lot of questions. So far, the hardest time I've had is sorting through the threads for what I need info on. I'm trying to get all the info I can first, without starting new threads and getting 'burned' for creating redundant threads. I wish Club Hotrod would add some new sub catagories.....like "Tires and Wheels", "Exhaust", etc, as I am having trouble searching under just "Tire Fitment" . But I'll keep searching.

Its great to be a member and I'll do my best to offer concrete suggestions and help to anyone that nees it.

Welcome to CHR David... If you can't find the answer for your questions in a search, just ask away. Lots of very knowledgeable guys on here, doubt to many questions have ever gone without an answer or 10!!!! Enjoy the forum and have fun, that's what it's all about!

Hi David, and welcome. Gee, your story probably mirrors a lot of other guys on here, all you would have to do is plug in some different numbers. I for one was new to computers and forums until I found this one, and felt immediately at home. My ex after 28 years also had similar words for me that are also unrepeatable in mixed company.

My Sons are also grown, so it is now my time to do the things I always dreamed of doing. Feels pretty good too.

If I can offer any advice relative to your build, I would say make a plan and theme up front and try to stick with it. Decide on a look and style and make and buy your parts to compliment that design. So many cars miss the mark because of a mix of different era parts that make the car look thrown together. You will find the people on this forum to be like sitting down with your best buddies over a beer, except for the beer. No one on here beats up on anyone for asking any legitimate question, regardless of how many times it has been asked before, or how basic it might seem to you.

We also love pictures, lots and lots of pictures. Please post some even if it is just a bare body, and then throughout the build process. We might offer at times a better way perhaps of doing something, or question the wisdom of doing a particular thing, but ultimately the car is yours and should reflect your desires and dream.

Welcome Stovebolter am new to the forum thing also but would encourage you to just jump right in, make yourself at home, and ask away. I personally don,t know much as i was a trucker for about 30yrs and didn,t have much time for anything else. I also was raised around street cars all my life but lost a lot of knowledge due to the type work i did. The people(i recon you can call us people) on here are great. Again WELCOME!

David, Welcome to CHR. Glad to hear that you are finally going to chase that dream. A 36 Chevy truck should be a neat build, a little to small for me, but well suited for many. Some photos of your build process would be great for us old geezers who have tired eyes. Glad to hear your son shares your interest, that makes for a really good project and a lot of good memories. Don't worry about redundant questions, we rarely give redundant answers. For many of us we can't remember what we might have said the last time and so we give a fresh answer. Of course there some youngin's on here who remember everything....at least in their opinion they do.

Wow. I never expected to get such a great response back everyone! Thanks for the welcome. Now I have to figure out what to start a thread as? In the Hot rod section I guess under "36 Chevy Low Cab build" or should I sectionalize it as "Tire fitment"? I'll try to start a thread tonight or tomorrow. Still trying to figure out where to start.

First and foremost, the style. I really grew up watching the Pro Street cylce and love the way they look but reality dictates to me that I will go more toward a daily driver as that is my goal. This truck will replace my stab at a rice burner race car. 2004 RX8. The car is great and really fast but for me its hard to replace the style of the older cars, and of coarse, that wonderfull sound of a lopey cam at near idle. So, this truck will be a mild hot rod, with most likely a LS1 with LS6 induction, looking to achieve 400hp or so with a modern tranney (4L60E), the typical boxed frame with tubular X-member, and don't forget the Flowmasters (love that sound), ending with most likely a 9" with discs at the rear. I decided to retain the fenders (cant stand the thought of slinging mud during the rain) and the hood with side skirts. I will be removing the crank out windshield due to fear of water leaks (opinions?). I have found that the little fendered vehicles of the late 20's and 30's have limited tire clearance if you want it close to the ground (tire size opions?). I have seen staggered 14" front and 15" rears done on cars but can't find any pictures of the trucks. I also somewhat like the new big wheel low profile look but not to the extreme that I have seen. I'm thinking that I would like about 4.5" of tire above both the front and back rims. It would seem to be a nice medium between the low profile look and the tall profile look. What do you think? I'm thinking 15X8's with 205/55/r15's on the front and 17X9.5's with 255/45/r17's on the rear. I will be getting the 2" wider rear fiberglass fenders (I'm told I should go with the fiberglass fenders as the ductile strength of the factory fenders will give me trouble with cracks from flopping). I found a place that sells them much cheaper than most of the other places but I know little about them. Be-Bops-glassworks. Anyone know anything about them? I have finally chosen a front end I believe I can trust from Street Rod Engineering. The Ultra-ride is more expensive, but these people have been very helpfull in answering my questions and I guess I just feel comfortable with them.

I guess that all for now. I'm sure I'll think of more.

Does anyone have a suggestion about what and which section I should start a thread under? "36 Chevrolet Low Cab Build suggestions"? "Big wheel/low profile versus classic Small wheel/tall profile"?

hey stovebolter we have a few things in common as i have been sneaking up on a 37 chebbie 1/2 ton and i think i just about got it cornered but i have a fender issue to work out .. nice group of folks here even if some of them are yankees but we all have the same things in common and everyone is willing to help ..
