If you are running Internet Explorer, you can go to the TOOLS menu and choose "pop up blocker" and choose to block all pop ups.
In today's world, it is imperative that a computer has an anti-virus protector running....one that you can update at least monthly. Symantec (Norton) and McAfee are the two best known ones. The freebies may work for a specific instance but are generally unreliable in the long run since the persons supporting the update file lose interest or dont have the resources to perform constant updates. Virus protection is cheap but it is like a condom.....you gotta use it!
You cannot get a virus from an email unless you open an attachment or click on a link. If the email or web page is unknown, why would you click on it anyway? There are tricky ways to get a virus...say someone at your church sends you a .jpg file....a virus can be embedded in the picture file so opening the file will load the virus.....gotta have protection!!!! It isnt the site.....there is no .porn or no .virus web pages....all files and pages should be suspect.
