greetings,

just joined here so i suppose i'm required to introduce myself..found this place via google and a link there regarding a 36 stude coupe [i have one].

i'm 39, originally from poland [in us since 1980]..previously i cared more about bikes than cages, especially hd and i had a highly modified sportster while i was in the navy in the mid-80s, but had to change my passion into 4wheels after breaking my neck in 1990.

i am an unemployed quadriplegic, and i can barely afford to keep my daily driver [68 olds cutlass modified somewhat]on the road off my meager disability income but i manage somehow because driving it hard is the only thing keeping me sane and forgetful about a really bad chronic pain and other problems stemming from my disability.
i have photos of both of my rides in my gallery here if anyone wants to take a looksee..i'm attaching one of those photos here of me and my cutlass...

i 've been living in northern new jersey since becoming a crip because that's where my parents moved into just prior to my accident and i needed their help post my disability. previously i lived in nyc, rhode island and virginia. joysie sucks btw as far as laws go and drivers..

mydaily ride is a '68 oldsmobile cutlass s with a modified 350 rocket, modified th400, 10bolt posi w/3.73 gears. headers/duals..it sounds and rides great and i drive the crap out of it and hard - the way these cars are meant to be driven. it's not a show car or a garage queen but despite its 'character' marks like badly pitted chrome, some chips all over and well used interior i get thumbs up and compliments on it every single day i'm on the asphalt..

i also have a rodded'36 stude dictator 3 window coupe that's been mine since '96 but i lack the funds to upgrade it to driving and lawful standards of nj so my poor baby has been parked at my parents' house driveway for the past 9 years. she's one of tthe most beautiful coupes ever made in my opinion and has a modified gm 400 small block [torker2/holley combo hidden in a fake blower case], crane fireball cam, hei ignition/coil, headers/dual, mustang2 ifs, r&p steering [manual], power disc brakes all around, modified th350/shift kit, 12 bolt posi w/3.73 gears. i start it every month and once or twice a year take her for a spin around a block..

sheeesh, i guess that's plenty gab for an intro.. ;-)))))))

thanx dh and dave [ha, almost called ya 'doc' ;)] and denny..cops in my town and surrounding towns are bastards so i rarely even peel out drivin through these places these days but almost elsewhere i drive they're cool and almost aways just let me go after checkin' my wheels out..i try not to ba an a-hole and not ride too hard right in front of one or where there is traffic/pedestrians nearby.

to be honest these photos actually make my rides look better than is their current actual shape. neither is garaged and although i take an exception to daily driven by never driving when there's salt on the road, i do drive every day there isn't come snow, mud, rain ...

cutlass is indeed very red hehe and 'car washed' weekly so no crud gets baked into its paint but it's not meant to be show quality anyway or i'd be too 'shy' to drive it daily..i'll likely have her dressed in black primer come time to change her wardrobe..

but my other baby has now some surface rust along fender edges, trunk and grill is in bad shape...also disc brake rotors are rusty, chrome on cragars and tires are rotting away-usual stuff for a car that's beoing forced to exist in a non-driven status for so long..even if covered.

welcome juras, bought a new olds. in 1969 looked just like that. well almost that good, it was the W30 and it came from the factory with small hub caps, but they didnt stay on there long. looking good :cool:

Juras Welcome to CHR. Your olds looks just like my Dads that he bought in 69. Almost the same color. Keep up your good spirts and your right about driving them hard. I do and at 61 I ain't changing.:D

Welcome to the forums, Juras. That's is a nice looking Cutlass and the Study looks nice also. Too bad it has to sit for now, but I am sure someday you'll be able to cruise it again. Take care.

Welcome to CHR Juras! Seems like you and I got a bit in common... Bikes, hot rods... heh. Not sure if a lot of people on here are into bikes. Your car is pretty sweet, the Stude is awsome as well. If I could find me a Stude I'd sell my 48 for one, especially a old 30's stude truck or such.
What year Sportster did you have and what mods were done to it? My father had one about 6 or 7 years ago and want's a custom bike now like a chopper but not some huge 42 degree rake. I don't remember his year Sportster but I think it was a 96 or so... I love older HD's better though or a nice custom bike built from the frame up.

Anyway's, stick around here and post. Good to have new members, especially the one's that actually hang around and post on a daily basis.

thanx all for the welcome and kind words. as far as having a ride that's sitting instead of driving-very true. and some have offered me pretty good money for my stude and then criticized me for keeping a set of rare wheels and just sitting on them when i refused but they don't understand how much i want to get out on a highway in this car one day..it's been my number 1 dream ever since i bought it and still is..i don't think i'd ever get over selling it and would just drink and drug myself into oblivion. yeah, there might be more important things in life but i'm not perfect hehe..

hellraiser[fmx]-my sportie was one of the worst models ever made-the '79 [xlh] and those are easily recognizable by their rear pipe having that extra bend..what a pain to just change the oil because of it :whacked: :mad:
but it's what i could afford then and not even thanx to my navy pay hehe because i was always getting arrested for having a somewhat too bleeding good time and as a result-busted in rank and half a month's pay for 2 [months]...in fact it got so bad they often didn't finish taking my money for the first fight/arrest when i would get busted outside of base again...but had some wild times and i digress...
i was able to buy the sportie [used and new harleys were always expensive even back before they were 'in']after a drunken cager hit me at night driving without lights in his boss' rusty pick up which he actually stole.. i had a crap of a rice bike because it was all i could afford: a zusuckie gs650 and he had no insurance so i had to sue mine for the value of my bike [it rolled over into p/up's bed from the impact and was totally totalled bent completely in half and forks bent over 90 degrees and all hehe] plus what my a-hole lawyer could get me for my broken bones and scars-all of 5 grand of it hehe..anyway-i found that sportie which was an only harley for 5 grand or just under advertised in the used bikes for sale then and i spent all of it on it before i even got my casts off...the bike was very well modified by a guy from louisiana who knew what he was doin' and just moved to virginia with his family. it had fully chromed engine, case and tranny and black jugs. it was bored out to nearly 1200cc, and had [illegal] glorious sounding 2 inch shortie open drag pipes, s&s carb..it would haul ass and it was basic black..i made it mine by stripping all of unnecessary parts such as mirrors, turnsignals,chain cover, speedo [kept the tach though] and front fender..hehe, can you say shower while riding in the rain?..it ran like crazy and i rode it like that..surprised and beat a lot of ricers on their 750 ninjas, cb's, xs's, etc.,. etc..who btw are probably riding their own shiny and problem free 'harleys' today hahaha...

but i love the old school -skull?:cool:- chopper look [actually the first choppers were like mine -everything unneeded was chopped off..it was alittle later that that stretched/raked rigid frame with grotesque length girders or springers came to be synonimous with the 'chopper' moniker]-rigid hardtail with some rake, superlow seat, nice forks, simple but beautiful design...
i see some really super nice ones at my local shows/cruises and these days they boast huge balls and cubes to match their sinister look too.. now you can also build a complete 'harley' without using any hd parts at all as complete mills and trannies are available from firms like s&s, revtech, std, etc..which is fine with me as i feel that hd sold its soul long time ago to its investors and weekend bikers who don't even know what the main purpose of black tshirts/clothes is ;) .theirs are often pressed ...:3dSMILE:
and i also love those very old bikes like early flatties, knuckles, pans,..not just hd either..indians, vincents, nortons, excelsiors, zundapps [ww2 and prior], and many other us and foreign vintage rides.

i won't post too much/often i think [but you'll get tapeworm long monstrosities like this one when i do hehe] because i likely won't have much to contribute here but from time to time i'll put up some photos of rides i really liked at some of my local cruises i often go to..or try anyway. i'm very much into true hot rods [not so much into street rods but the're ok too], leadsleds-especially chopped mercs, and mean street machines with real blowers and balls.i like the rod primer look as well. flames optional hehe.

hotrodangel-hey, not only are ya a stude nut but as i understand by your nick/avatar-a lady motorhead...pleasure is all mine as we need far more of you ladies in this passion [ok, some call it hobby :confused: ]..right back at ya..

ahh..w30 yz nyisssssse..best except for the hurst editions. but my cutlass will kick ass of any stocker 442 at a traffic light just as it is..factory rims and 60s rubber and all.

btw, you have a'97 s10 with an lt1? pretty kewl..i had a similar daily ride b4 my cutlass- a customized '99 s10 -full walk through cab/bed conversion with a permanent cap and rear mattress, suspension with air bags/compressor/air tank, american torque thrusts, gibson exhaust, chip, k&n filter, hotter ignition/coil plus some extras...it was a 4.3v6 but ordered with a locking differential..it went straight to the conversion shop from a dealer back in '98. it was the only new ride i ever had in my life [likely last one too] but i got a lot of help with paying for it from government.

i left it as part of a tree in september '03 after my air bags blew up [or lost pressure] while taking a 90 degree turn at about 30 mph..lost control and swerved to avoid a mailbox, which maneuver threw me sideways on the passenger seat and as a result i pulled my hand control lever [thus actually accelerating] as i went head on into a tree at around 45mph..nasty permanent injuries and have a lot of steel in my legs now because of it including 2 rods from my hip to knee on my right thigh..lost most of my diaphragm function too so i get winded easily now. almost all ribs broken [for nteenth time hehe]. etc. etc. right leg is almost 3 inches shorter and my ribcage caved in for the second time in my life which makes me much shorter now than my original 5'9"...eh, story of my life these crashes hehe..got some bucks from insurance for the totalled pick up and bought that cutlass which i'm much happier with anyway.:cool:

my s10 was ok but lacked balls and that v8 feel/sound. plus i simply like older tin have but yours definitely has some balls with that v8. bet you surprise some unsuspecting 'tuners' at the traffic lights :3dSMILE:

Sounds like you had a sweet bike. I see you said something about liking Indians, etc. My father was looking at buying an indian bike a few months back and they sure are nice. I am with you on HD selling out. Hear about what they are trying to do now? I like old HD but now after all this stuff I hear they are trying to do to shut the custom bike world down I don't want a HD anymore or have a bike with any of their parts on it for that fact. If you ever post on www.clubchopper.com you will know what I am talking about.

no, i don't know what you're talking about but that's also because i stopped caring what hd does or put out right around the time i became paralyzed in '90..i'll drop by that forum when i'll have some time. without knowing the story i can't really comment but older, faithful bikers literally saved hd from going under not only by staying faithful to it when it was putting out crappy iron but by putting their hard earned bux when their mouth and hearts were and buying its stock share control from amf.

if hd now is actually going after customizers, it's biting the hand that saved it from a prolonged demise in the first place and the only one that hd should blame for losing the core die hards as its supporters is oneself for giving into greed and fad rather than keeping its integrity.

original indians are great bikes although those stylized unique chief, etc., fenders looked always kinda kooky to me. that new indian ompany i know nothing about and doubt they have mucyh more of the genuine soul save for the name. i also dig the boss-hoss concept although those bikes look like only their mother could love its ungainly looks but its concept delves deep right into pure american hot rod spirit and these sleds certainly don't lack huge balls..plus, what better way to connect the bikers and rodders than to put a ballsy, cager, made in us of a, mill into a bike frame hehehe...i wonder how long before someone slams a bds, etc., 6-71 blower on one with a huge bug catcher :3dSMILE:..i'd likely do it if i still could ride and had the bux.

btw, i know all this is getting off-subject but hell, it's my 'introduction' so it shouldn't bother the moderators here ;)

Yep, I agree, some call it a hobby, but for most of us here, myself included, it is a passion...it's in our blood, it's a way of life, a lifestyle, our greatest weakness, and our only sanity...:cool:

While I will be the first one to admit that I don't know a whole bunch about working on & building hot rods, I am learning...

I have learned so much already since first starting the build on my Stude...but I've got a long way to go. Before I started, I didn't know how to run a grinder, or a cutting wheel, or a chop saw, but now I can, and I know my way around the old toolbox fairly well too...Luckily, the guy that is helping me build this truck is extremely patient and is willing to teach me...His help, along with the great bunch of guys here at CHR, guide me in building this truck, and building it right. **)

Juras You life is similar to mine except no service for me as I lost part of my foot in a hunting accident. Took up boxiing instead and became a professional in 1966 as a welterweight, but was to interested in the ladies and beer so after a 14 and 4 recored gave it up.

My bike experience was a 305 superHawk which was pretty good back in the 60's. My brother and I put it on it's side at 105(Iwas driving drunk) and I only got a few cuts and scrapes, but my brother broke his arm and leg. Gave up the bikes after that but didn't give up the booze until my wife said (after my last bar fight) one more and I''m walking. Now it's just a couple beers a week.

That stude of yours is interesting(don't think I ever saw one like yours).

Here is a quick short story on the HD thing Juras if you wanna know. Basically EPA and some other law places are trying to close out the custom bike scene for good. So they are saying in 2006 California law will be that noone can have more than 1 custom chopper or bike that doesn't meet the new inspection laws in their lifetime and that they can't sell the custom bike until they have had it for 5 years or more. Then by 2010 it will be like this throughout the entire US. I thought maybe it was a joke or a rumor but so far it's true (it's on that Club Chopper, gotta just search for it and it's all over there too). They said that HD is trying to help EPA pass this law since HD already uses their crappy cat back exhausts and all the new emissions parts on their bikes so they don't care and that way it will be better for them because either people will have to buy from them or nothing. So basically it's like they are shutting down all their competition and it will make their job easier than ever.
That is not the only thing and I just skipped tons of info, etc but you get the deal. To me it's a bunch of bull and they are trying to get all these people on this site to sign some thing and send it in and all but I hear that wont work and wont change nothing. Stupid tree huggers, I swear. They think cutting down on emission laws will help, it never will, air is already polluted it wont get better and it wont stay the same so no point in doing that.
Now if this is true then I wonder what will happen to hot rods in about another 50 or so years. Most guys here wont care about 50 or 70 years down the road since (not being mean) they wont even be here but I sure hope to live that long and if they do something like this then they can just kill me because all I will have left that I like is guitar and drums, that's it.
Sorry to babble on about this and yeah it probably sounds like a bunch of crap to you guys but the chopper forums isn't the only place I am hearing this around.

37chevy, yeah in a way i'm 'lucky' 'cause i can still do crazy stuff without having to feel responsible for a wife/kids..although the downshot is the lonesome blues once in a while hehe. i like that bit of you becoming a fighter after an accident..i always did things backward like that too [example-took up guitar after losing two fingertips down to first knuckles of my chord hand in a bike sprocket..actually got pretty good and devised my own 'short' chords for 2 and a half fingers]:) these stude coupes are rare birds. if you'll go to 'hotrod talk' [or is it shop] under the topic '36 studebaker' you'll find a link to a hot rod mag feature of another 36 stude dictator rod they did a couple of years ago.

fmx-yeah, that sounds like another attempt by a bunch of misguided treehugging a-holes trying to make a commie country out of us..i come from one and hate shit like that. hd is a company who turned into a pathetic incoporation ridin' on its former legend..no respect from me. and yer right about this eventually affecting other groups like hotrodders, etc.
btw-i joined the cc after seeing some amazing work in leather from rocky at purekustom..if ya people haven't seen it check it out..bloody awesome craft and talent. i think i'll be lurking there almost as much as here just to feed my eyes with some of those super lookin custom sleds. man i miss riding :(

Yeah man that guy does some AWSOME work! Check out the metal work section, there are some VERY talented guys in there too. Even though you can't ride, maybe going to those forums checking them out and talking about them will help. Or maybe they will just make you wish you can ride more I don't know. I don't ride dirt bikes anymore and I go on some motocross or freestyle sites and look at pics of kids hitting 80 foot ramps and wish I can ride again when I can't so I try not to go there too much, just get's me in a bad bummed mood.
If you miss bikes still then ever think about working on them? Like finding old bikes, tinker with them and resell or something? I am just trying to throw idea's at ya you know, seems like you miss it a lot. Would be cool to take up leather work on your spare time and who knows, maybe you got a natural talent and can work your way up to making sweet seats for bikes. Hell it sounds like a job you can do in a wheelchair to me and it would keep ya busy.
Oh and the section on the chopper site about metal work is real good to read up on if your into custom led sleds, etc because there are a lot of helpful people and all that theory like stuff about metal shaping basically is the same for hot rodding. There are some really cool people there though. They made some girl there a bike for her. I think she was making a frame and then some guy showed her how to make a tank over the net and made her one and gave it to her and everyone else threw in parts like bars, fenders, etc and she made a bike. Pretty awsome if you ask me.

Man I was just looking at your Stude in your gallery and damn that is a NIIIIIICE ass car! Probably one of the best looking cars of that year IMO. I'd be hugging it too if I had that thing. All I can say is NEVER sell that thing (unless it's to me of course haha) and make sure they bury that thing with you so it's yours forever.

i actually get bummed somewhat too by looking knowing i can't do it on 2 wheels anymore but still enjoy checkin' outsome nice bikes. as far as doing anything it won't work, not only do i lack balance of my trunk from my chest down but my hands are paralyzed as well [i'm a quad not a para] and i can't hold anything in them..barely can wiggle my fingers a bit. i gained about 50% ofmy arms/shoulders strength back eventually by super hard work in rehab and can transfer on my own to/from wheelchair but these problems [and others like inability to sweat, lack of control of physiological functions, etc] are beyond the possibility of getting them back so that's why i'm unemployed and unable to do anything like music, art, etc. which i loved once to indulge in.
but i'll check out all those sections on cc regardless.:)
now i'm off for a moon ride to the tune of v8. later all.

that was a nice little ride and fell good hehe...thanx man, i feel the same way obviously. actually i often tell people and my family that i would like to get buried in it but that would probably be too much of a waste of such a rare stude so it's mostly a wish that likely won't come true..plus those cemetary grave spot costs would be too much as i'd need 2 to fit the stude in hehe..unless i'll become rich before kickin' the bucket then i can be buried in my stude on my own property ..
