    my crazy project

i have embarked on a huge project. i got a 73 porsche 914 for free it had one very big surprise though,. it was equipped with a 66' 327 i am restoring the car and parts are not so easy to find. i am only 16 and this is my daily driver. this car has a 935 looking body with huge mickey sportsmans i love huge tires! i droped a valve through a piston and had to pulled the motor only to find out that while sitting in the woods for 7 years one of the cylinder walls was cracked. so i had to trash the block. i made a few phone calls and found a 283 which had just been rebuilt. i wasnt sold on the 283 till i saw it was 4 bolt main. the motor was in some guys truck for like a month and he didnt like it he said is wasnt enough power, so i got the block and pistons for $125. a good deal. i have everything to build the motor so i wasnt worried. well everything is off at the machine shop to be cleaned up and ill have this thing running again. for such a small car a high reving 283 is all i need to beat all the rice rockets in fact i think i will name it the "Enola Gay" lol too bad none of those kids i smoke will get it but oh well Happy New Year to all

    Great combination!

When I was in Germany in the early 90s there was an Army Captain that had a 914 with a built 302 Chevy in it. The thing was wicked fast and he used to terrorize the 911s and BMWs with it. The Germans loved it and it even was featered in a couple German car magazines. I was taking college classes at night and used to walk past his place and talk with him on the way home sometimes. He was out working on it a lot, he kept having to re-engineer stuff whenever he would break something.

You'll have a lot of fun with it, be careful!!

Tyler, Better check that block again .Chevrolet never made a 4 bolt 283,so if it is someone has gone to a lot of expense on an old block. Refer to tooltimes post under the thread How can i tell what size my chevy is to help you identify what you have. or post the numbers of the block here and we can help you.It is now 3:05 a m New Years Day. What am I doing here? I'm going back to bed. Later!

I would like a world where Oldsmobile and AMC are still around, gas costs 5 cents a gallon and the EPA doesnt rob all the power from your motor. As for the 4-bolt 283, you may want to make sure it is truely a 283. Seems kind of odd that someone would make a 283 4bm.

i know it sounds odd and im no fool i know what a 283 looks like and i know what 4 bolt main looks like i have worked on both 2 and 4 bolt as for the block it is a 283 with a bore of 3.97 i ran the casting number and it is a 283 i still dont see why anyonw would do that though would it make it able to rev higher? that was my evaluation of why smoeone would have done it

Tyler, sounds like a very cool project, any chance of posting some pics?! You sound like you've got an awful lot of experience and info for a 16 year old! Where'd you learn it all?
You miss 100% of the shots you never take

Most small block chevys can be modified to have 4 bolt mains. It is a fairly simple machining process. There are high performance applications where smaller displacements are needed either to conform to rules or to meet class requirements of weight to cubic inches. I don't know if they still are, but various configurations of 283s and 265s were popular in NHRA Gas and modified classes where you might have a 3500 pound car with a 283 to fit into F/MP or E/Gas. Since these motors were small, they made power with RPM and gear multiplication. Many of these cars had 6.17-1 gears in the rear end and were turning over 10,000 RPM going through the lights. Other places you might find these small high reving motors is at Bonneville or Indy style racing. So while a 4 bolt main 283 may not have been made by Chevy, we all know that hot rodders will do whatever it takes to go fast. You have a piece of hot rod history there, hope you are able to put it to good use.
