Im thinking about stuffing a 5.7 fuel injected HEMI into my dodge challenger.Has anyone here undertaken such a mod before?Please tell me about your experiece.My buddies tell me Im crazy for even entertaining such a thought.(They re chevy guys )But the thought of making my dodge into a HEMI powered daily driver is too irresistable.Any help will be appreciated by this humble Mopar student. ..Uh oh..wifes home..time hide the parts catalog...later guys!
Of course the chebbie guys tell you that you're nuts, they know how bad a whooping they will get when you're done. Mike P. will probably be along with all the info you need. Go for it, sounds like a great car in the works. !!!!!

They have everything you need to make it a drop in, including mount adapters to work with your LA engine mounts (assuming you have the small block). They will even sell you the new 6.1 engine................woooohoooooo!!

I personally would have gone with the 6.1. modern motor, should be reasonably reliable, and 425Hp on tap. woo hoo!
Actually I'm not all that well versed on the new Hemis.
I did do a little research on them a while back when I replied to a question on another forum I visit. The guy wanted to swap a 5.7 into a mid 50's Desoto. My initial reaction to his swap was to suggest he go with an early Hemi, after researching the availability and price the new Hemis are going for, in my mind the engines look better and better as swap material. Heck I might even do one if someone will make a multiple carb intake for them :LOL: :LOL: .
To me this sounds like it could really be a fun project. As with any major swap project, do your research. there's a lot of good info on the site Bob referenced, and I would suggest you do an internet search to see what else is out there.
Plan everything out as well as you can in advance and go for it.

Some of the things that makes the new Hemi look VERY appealing for the future of hot Roding (in my mind anyway :whacked: ) are:
Naturally the HP and Torque numbers
The retention of the SB belhousing bolt pattern which will of course accept the current transmissions, and also allow the use of older style 727 TF, and readily available manual transmissions.
The aftermarket parts that are starting to show up (Chrysler is apparently already making a carbureted intake ......darn only 1 carb) and "plug and play" harnesses.
But likely the biggest is what looks like the availability these engines are going to have as time goes on. Chrysler is apparently gearing up for just under 1/2 million of these engines a year (according to an article I just total production of the original 426 was only around 11,000 units total). Availability and that old supply and demand thing.could make this VERY common swap material (OK everybody say cookie cutter :3dSMILE: )
MY only real gripe with the engine is those damn ugly coil packs attached to the valve covers (my minds already going over how to hide them somewhere else).

Youre absolutely right about the chrysler carb..it sucks..as a matter of fact, my 318 is also a one carb.Yeah, mopar is gearing up to push alot of brand new crate engines very soon.I hear theyre also working on a new 540 (or was it 550?)HEMI.Dunno but theyre exspensive as heck!Im just hoping to find a wrecked 300c or somthing else with a 5.7 HEMI.But in the mean time , Im doing mostly body work on the Dodge. A little rust here and there but all panels are straight and original.As soon as I get the digital camera to work right, Ill post some b4 and after pics.And once again, thank you Mike P. Please share any more info you come across concerning these hot HEMIs.
If you haven't already, pick up a copy of Aug 2005 Hot Rod magazine. They do a dyno test on the crate 5.7, and have a nice write up on the Hemi history.

I see one problem with the new hemi, front sump oil pan. The rear sump just works so much better with older crossmember type suspensions. I'm sure there is a converion out that or it wouldn't be that hard to frankenstein an oil pan and pickup tube out of a few others.

All you have to do to the 5.7 is put in a mild cam,k&n cold air induction and new chip and you get a screaming 5.7 with 450+hp with no limit on rpm or speed, my Durango has a factory limiter on it at 5800 RPM and 110 MPH.
The 5.7 would make a great swap engine and if you added headers with a good exhaust systems your dream machine would be a screaming sleeper.
If I was not so fond of the 273 commando in my 66 Barracuda I would consider the swap myself and I may in the future.
