Just brought home a 69 baracuda, not sure what motor in it,340 or 318, also am looking to put an O/D tranny or 5spd. in. Need info, I'm originally a chevy guy so am lost with mopars . I believe the car was a 383 4 spd. I'm not sure which way to go with the tranny.
there are many options you can do, the newer autos are basically A904's wiht O/D, but they're taller and the car would need modifacation to the tranny hump. Keisler makes several kits to swap in maunals (5 or 6 speed) that require minimal sheet metal work.
Easiest and cheapest swap would be to put in an A833 OD four speed. With the right parts, this would be a bolt in. If your still running a stick in the car the only 2 changes would be the tranny itself and possibly the bellhousing.
Tranny: The A883 OD had several small variations. Basically what you would need would be the version with the long tail shaft which would physically match the original 4 speed that had been in the car. This is easy to identify due 2 shifter mounting pads located on the tail housing.
All OD 833s had a 5 1/8" pilot bearing reatiner. If you have a bellhousing with the medium size pilot bearing hole (4.80"), you can have the 5.125 bearing retainer turned down to fit.
The giveaways to tell is you have an A833 OD are:
The big bearing reatainer,
They usually have an aluminum case instead of cast iron (although some standard A833 were in aluminum cases and some OD 833s were in cast irom cases)
The shift arms on the cover will have one pointed up and the other down.
THE ONLY REAL WAY TO CHECK IF ITS AN A833 OD IS TO PULL THE COVER AND COUNT TEETH.
Thanks for the info, I guess I didn't fill the form out right, I'm from Saskatchewan Canada. I have my pet 73 Camaro that has OD 700R4 just changing over to a ford 9" with 389's compared to the 373's which were getting a little on the weak side, Getting a little older so with standard in that barracuda I may not like shifting, but one reason why a standard may be right is it came with one and the clutch peddle is still in there although it's a 3 spd. auto right now.There is cruising gears in it now, but I got 391's with the project so I am thinking OD 833 and 391's would give a decent RPM at 60MPH and still lots of go off the line. The other thing is how can you tell the difference between 318 and 340? This motor was build 5 yrs. ago but the guy doesn't know what motor he bought if you can believe that, also different performance heads are supose to be on it. Just for general information the OD A833s usually have a 3.09 1st gear and a .73 OD.
Basically your 3.91 turns into a 2.85 in OD.

does the 318/340 have a factory intake 4 bbl or just 2bbl ?
without block numbers i thinks its tough to tell but if a factory 4 bbl it starts to lean towards a 340/360 not a 318.
I have one of these trans I want to install in my86 dodge d150. The trans has a 23 tooth input shaft. Can ya teel me what clutch and presure plate I'm gonna need? The truck has a granny low 4 speed in it right now. What I have for the install right now is a 4 speed bell housing from a dart, the trans and a pistol grip shifter from a 71 super bee for bench seat and linkage for the od trans.
I've been gone for a while, but back home & into the project again. Yeh, Mike I think I'll go your route & put that o/d 833 in. The gearing sounds right. I hear rumours that the A833 is not a strong o/d. I'm thinking possibly it's just a matter of how it's done up. I have a 700R4 with 500 ponies in my camaro and I abused it on several occassions for 3 yrs. and so far so good. The other route is a standard. I have no idea if there is a 5spd.swap out there for the 340, 6spd. Viper is way to pricy, and a 4spd. std. I'm not sure of the gearing.......... if auto is better in that department or not. Thanks for the welcome Canadianal, The motor has an after market aluminum intake. I was told to check for numbers just below the heads........ I'll see what turns up. The other thing I need are front fenders for the 69 Barracuda. I see there are fiberglass ones out there so have to find a good price on some and get this project moving. When I find some numbers on the block, I'll check that sight Dan-0.
I'll admit I have seen a couple of A833 OD trannys that broke. The part that failed was the aluminum case.
While most of the OD units have the aluminum case there are a few that came with the castiron case. Internally the OD and non-OD should be equally as strong, however the aluminum case does not seem to hold up as well. IMO the A833 and A833OD units were one of the strongest factory 4 speeds built.
As it happens, the OD 833 for my 57 Plymouth has the iron case. Becasue I have the parts (and I just enjoy building 4 speeds) I am going to build a spare A833 OD just to have around. Basically what I'm going to do is swapt the OD parts into a spare Iron case I have laying around.
For the spare tranny I'm using a case that uses the small input bearing and 3 3/4" pilot bearing retainer bolt circle. The beauty of this is I can use either the standard small (3.35") pilot bearing retainer, the C97619 (3.80") medium retainer or the C97728 (4.125") big beraing retainer. This will allow the tranny to fit any of the standard 4 speed bellhousing (big or small bolck) that Chrysler used.

Thanks Mike. Do you think the 833 od trans will hold up in my D150 pick up? I don't plan on doin burnouts, just pullin trailers and normal size loads coast to coast a couple time a year.
Gear oil in an 833 will wreck it, the lube holes are too small and it won't lubricate. I wrecked one in my '82 Miser with gear oil, all the bearings went. Hey, Freddie, Melville isn't so far from here, if you want a rebuildable 833 OD I have one!
Thanks for the info on the correct lubricant for this trans. I would have certainly put gear lube in it. Can ya tell me a good place to purchase a hurst shift rod kit? I already have the part # I have a pistol grip shifter originally for a 71 super bee with a bench seat to install in my pickup. That'll be different
Iv'e been doing some checking and I hear a 518 is a o/d for the Mopar 340. And thanks for all the info from all the fellows that helped me out. For the 69 Barracuda I've confirmed I have a 340 with XX heads that have been done with a lot of after market performance parts. The intake and heads are ported and port matched. The biggest thing I'm up against is the cam. I don't know what it is. I will be going with an auto O/D with 391 gears but I don't know what the peak RPM should be and what kind of stall I should have. I still could use front fenders for the car. I was at a Mopar show and talked to a lot of fellows and they all said if you want a good lines and less trouble keep and rework your fenders. I guess fiberglass fenders are a big hastle and will never fit right.
