I am getting a 70's volarie from a buddy for 2 cases of beer. It has a slant6 in it , but he had to advance the timing alot just to get the car started, I know the engine will need to be rebuilt but having to advance the timing is that a worn out cam? Just want to know what I may have to change and what I might be able to keep during the rebuild.
Does anyone have an idea what might cause the timing to have to be advanced like that?
Worn out Timing chain can cause that,,,,,,if it was a worn cam,,,it would affect the breathing of the engine,,,yeah,,,i would definately look at the Timing Chain as the Culprit.Quote:

Thanks Thunderbucket, I will check that out first. Hopefully its just that, I would really like to have the 49 plymouth on the street this summer and wait til next winter to rebuild the engine.
Your timing chain will have jumped a few cogs, you'll need a chain and cam gear. Don't chuck the Volare too quick, the front suspension and rear end can be made to fit your '49.
