Here's what I’m planning on doing with my 1971 Chevy Impala 400 custom. Go ahead laugh if you want. Call me stupid if you want, it's OK I can take it, I’ve got thick skin.

Leave the motor stock with the 2 barrel carb. It is apart at this point (if you want you can read my thread in the Chevy small block forum) What I would like to do is get it in good running condition and put it back together with the only change being a chrome dress up kit to the motor. Planning on about $150.00 for this. I don't want to Hot Rod this car as I don't think the bottom end will hold up without a complete rebuild and at this point I am not willing to put that kind of money in it.

Put on dual glass pack exhaust to make it sound good $200.00?

Wheels - 100 spoke "Gold" wire wheels with chrome rims $560.00. Don't to hard but picture this: The car is brown with a white top and I think the wheels would really set off this color combination.

Finish body work and the new paint job (same color) looking at Maco for now $400.00? - Yeah I now you get what you pay for!

Jack the car up, wire brush and scrape then rattle can the under carriage to clean it up $20.00 in black spray paint.

Interior: Replace carpet tan color $150.00? Recover seats white vinyl $600? Spray paint vinyl door and side panels white (same color) $10.00

This is a limited budget fix up for about $2000.00. I plan on keeping this car for a while as Techinspector made me realize that it meant more to me than I originally thought. Thanks Tech. So let me know what you think? Rip away and remember I'm tough, I can take it!

Convertable would be sweet but don't think that's in the budget

Not a true rag top convirtable, chop the top off and than get some kind of latching system so you can put it back on when you want it on. Shouldn't cost to much to do it just the latches is the only cost and then the time to fix the cuts and smooth them out and stuff. It'd have to have 4 latches, 2 in the back and 2 in the front.

I think the frame would be the biggest issue? I'm sure it would require additional supports so the middle of the car didn't fold in two when you opened the doors. Maybe wrong never gave it that much thought.

I watched a show and the car was a caddy or an olds of the early 70's and they never reinforced the frame.

Could work... Not sure I have the intestinal fortitude to cut the top off a perfectly good car though

This whole thread reminds me of the time I was stuck at a lowrider show all day.

Its your car, do what you feel looks best.

Yeah I know. Just wanted some opinions. I think it would look good on the car but it just doesn’t fit my personality. I'm exactly what you wouldn’t picture driving a car like that. White 36 year old man in a lowrider look'n Impala. It does kinda crack me up when I think about it though.

Sounds like you didnt enjoy the show?

It's different, but hey who am I to say? Different strokes for different folks. Go where your tastes tell you, you're the only one you have to make happy.

I don't know... when I look at the car that's what I picture. It just kinda fits. Can't see it look'n like a hot rod with a hood scoop and fat rear tires if you know what I mean. I could just leave off the "gold" wire wheels and make it look stock but then I just think the wheels would really set it off and tie in well with the brown body and white top.

Nothing wrong with low riders, do what ya want and have a ball. Thank God we don't have to all build cars that look like somebody else's.
