Project blowngoat pics

Well spent about 20 hours this weekend working on the GTO and am pretty happy with the way its coming out,i had the chassis&cages done in yellow but decided to paint the car red with yellow flames so i didnt think the yellow frame/cage would look to good the way it was.

So after about 20 hours of stripping sanding taking apart,then painting clearing and putting it back together:CRY: heres where its at right now.

The 540 should be done very soon so i'm getting really excited now that its really coming together.hope ya like it:)

Man that is a really nice car you got there! How did you learn to build the frames and cages like that and how long did it take you to be able to get good at it? I have always wanted to learn to make my own frames and all.

FMX i'm a welder/fabricator for a living so that helps alot,but really as long as you have patience and can weld thats about all it takes besides a few specelized tools.Did i mention it takes patience:LOL:

The frame is a chris alston chassisworks frame and you get it in pc's and it all has to be welded together but it comes with blue prints and all the correct measurments so you just lay it out and a very flat surface (or build a jig)and start taking measurments and making reference points on the garage floor. I put a center line from side to side and front to back along with a center line for my axle all chalk lined on the garage floor so that i could take all my measurments from the same starting point that way everything comes out square.

Best advice i can give ya is buy a few good books on welding and fabrication technics and they will help you to learn some of basics as well as the little "tricks" that speed up the process. Besides that a tubing notcher is a must have for doing cages like this.

But again patience can not be substituted on a project like this or any project for that matter,its takin me 4 years to get to this point.

Where do you get those frame peices at? I might have to look and get a frame for something if I can't find a good solid car out here.

If your wanting to build a "pro street" style car that really the best thing to do. Then you can buy a car for cheap and strip it down to the shell and go from there.

Thanks a lot man, I will check that out.... I wish I could find an old car around here for sale but can't... I was thinking about maybe buying a frame like that and a body somewhere and then get my own engine from a junk yard and all. It would be lot's of money but fun as hell and I would learn a lot.

nice work.i too am a welder and fabricator for a living.from 7 to 330 i work for a construction company, 4pm to 730pm three days a week, i help my friend build race cars and set up his super gas 33 roadster.is this a street car or is it race?i plan on building a street strip 65 mustang , alston chassis, powered by a big block chevy.again, nice work!!!:D
