Vehicle storage using a tarp type shed.

I have one of those tarp sheds I've had for years setting at my parent's place. I bought it years ago to put my corvette in. The 2nd week it was up the tarp was blown off it. I put 2 new ones on it and after the 3rd one got ripped off it I haven't used the stupid thing since.

Lately since I'm running out of storage space, I'm contemplating bringing this tarp shed to my house. I can put it behind my garage and it will be protected by a privacy fence on the other side. Maybe the tarp won't get ripped off it now.

My main concern is rusting etc. I plan to put gravel down so what ever car/truck I put in it isn't setting on dirt/mud. The green house effects shouldn't be a real problem until gets hotter outside. What are your guys' thoughts on this who live in moist climates as well? Should I add a vent somewhere on an end wall to help prevent moisture build up etc?

Six sheets of 1/2" plywood
One 10X20 tarp
Several pieces of scrap carpet

Plywood down first, tarp on top, this will keep the ground moisture from wicking up from the ground and attacking the undercarriage. Carpet to sit on the tires on.

And definitely vents in front / rear.

I've used one for my hot rod and several cars, they are the next best thing to an actual garage. water proof, rat proof, dirt proof, and anchored by the car so it won't blow away, mine has been in 55mph + winds without issue.

My friend had his 69 camaro in one. I wonder how they hold up to 55mph+ wind at 15* or colder?

doesn't get that cold here, but mine has held up for several years in harsh 100° summers and heavy rain/windy winters.

I might just end up getting a storage unit. I found out I have to get a permit to put one in the yard. The catch is that the permit for one is higher than for an actual garage. They must not want them in the town???

Ryan, do you guys use the recycled shipping containers at all? Over this way you can get one delivered for 3 G., cheaper and faster than a garage but some communities don't like them. My friend Mark has 2 or 3 of them. I've been thinking of getting one to stuff the tractors into.

Yeah we can but if I had $3g's laying around I still wouldn't spend it on one. I'd be dumping it into something with shingles or something with flames. :LOL: I know a guy in Arizona that bought a place that had a house made out of them. It's a good idea. Just out of my price range. I may just put a stick built something up by my shop if the weather will allow it. I', currently planning that now. Haha

Yeah, there's a few "homes" up here that were built by stacking them and some are really crazy in the way they were stacked. upper levels overhanging the lower level and things like that. I hear you on the cash on hand. I don't know what I'd be spending it on but it's probably not something I need! LOL

I had a portable shed with a torn cover after a few years. Repaired it with tarps silver side out for a while. After all was said and done the weathered tarps started failing. I drove my mini truck to the home center for tin roofing and some barn siding. Structured the front and back with 2x4's and siding then put siding lengthways down the sides ( 4' high ) and then roofed it/ overlapped with the siding. Ribs run the wrong way, but it works. Keeps the lawn equipment dry at least

Most of the zoning nazi ordinances don't apply to something with wheels, IE trailers.

if it has wheels no property tax . cheaper to buy an enclosed trailer.

For us if it has wheels then they'll charge you an excise tax annually.

For us, in this sort of situation, a shipping container is the best option. They're considered to be a 'temporary' structure (like scaffold,) so their value is not added to your Rateable Capital Value and no permit is required.
I recently bought two new ones (20 ft x 8 ft,) for $6000 each landed. I couldn't have built a comparable shed for that sort of money, what with permits, site inspections, building inspections, neighbours' approvals, drainage from downpipes, concrete foundations, (and foundation inspections of reinforcing steel placements,) and so on and on ad nauseam...

They were packed full with goodies (each weighing around nine tons,) at Rock Bottom (our current abode,) and are at present sitting outside my shed at Our New Selection (our future abode,) awaiting the shed reaching the lockable stage. They will then be emptied and returned to Rock Bottom to be filled again.
And they're secure. It would take a well equipped and determined scumbag to break in to them.
And when I've finished shifting I can sell them and recoup my money, or retain them for use as garden sheds.
The 'pros' far outweighed the 'cons'.
Win/win.

we use tractor trailers around here for storage . no tax of any kind so far anyway. looking forward to our move north and luckily oklahoma is pretty much the same . we have only one permit required here and it is for septic . other than that no codes or permits needed for anything .

A semi trailer is a great option too. I really would like to get an enclosed trailer. Just not at this current time.

Better than the fabric material. The front and rear walls with the 2x4 structure really stiffens the whole thing up. My front opening/ door is only just wider than my sub compact tractor
