Well ok I am looking to get a car here real soon for a project (a slow one since I am a teen and not lot's of money) and I wanted to just post up some that are for sale near me and wanted to see if you guy's can tell me if you think it's a good deal and what not. Any/all oppinions and info are appreciated. Thanks.

Ok well I REALLY like this body style and I think this one and the Merc is the best one I can find out here in North carolina that's not over 5000 bucks that I MIGHT be able to afford. The only thing I don't like about this is that it's a 6 volt (which can be changed easily right?) and it is a 6 cylinder. Tell me what you think and how much could I get a 350 or a 454 for?

I would say there are a couple things to consider. first the Merc would definately have the least amount of work to get it sweet. I myself like the two older cars which out of the two the fastback chevy is the best deal. The pontiac is a great car and would be an awesome one to restore but a shame to hotrod. The price is right on the old chev and it would be a great one to hotrod but you will be looking at alot of time and money. Budget and how soon your wanting to start driving it will be a big factor in the choice probly. You have great tastes in cars and I think any of them would be a great investment.
I think the 51 Chevy is your best choice for a hot rod. Changing it over to 12 volt would'nt be much of a problem. Changing the engine to a Chevy V8 would be a little more work. It has a torque tube driveshaft. (The rear end and trans are connected with a tube. The driveshaft is inside the tube.) So you have to plan on changing the rear end too.
I like the 4 door 65 Chevy. If it was a 2 door I'd be on the phone instead of the computer. It would be a good second car for when you don't want to drive the hot rod. It's a straight six not a V6. A friend and I pulled a 6 and put a 350 in one of these one Sat. morning and burned off the tires in the afternoon. It took us three hours from start to finish. It's a bolt in swap. The interior is still good and The body looks pretty good so with a paint job it would make a great sleeper type of hot rod.
The Pontiac is too nice a car. I don't think I could tear apart a car like that to build a rod. I'd probably keep it as an antique. Maybe I could do it for a customer but not for myself. But that's just me. I think Pontiacs had the torque tube driveshaft too.
The Merc would be my last choice. But that's only because I don't care for the design. That plus it would take your whole $5000 budget.
The chevy is a nice car to rod and it has alot of potential, the merc looks ready to drive now and it has a V-8, the pontiac is nice but you be spending alot of money to upgrade it and the 65 chevy belair is good. I would go with the 65 chevy and find a 327 which woudl bolt up real easy. It all depends on what you want to put into it, but being young you can drive the cheby or merc now and have some fun.
Only thing about the 65 is that it's a 4 door. I don't like 4 door's unless it's a Merc or a Buick. I like the other chevy and even though I would have the change the rear end then that wouldn't be a prob because I would plan on doing that anyways and same with tranny and engine and the 6 volt.... What all would I need to do to change the 6 out? I know the alternator I would put a 90 or 120 in it, umm what else..... distributor, etc. But I don't know if I would have to change ALL the wiring like the head light's and all in it. The thing I like about the chevy is that it look's a bit similar to the 49 Merc coupes and that's what I really wan't but none around here and they are expensive. I don't plan on getting a crappy car to keep just for a little bit, I wan't something that I can go ALL OUT on if I have to because I wan't to keep it for a long time and also having to wait to drive it is not a problem at all because I will be having fun working on it. I don't even have my lisence now (even though I was supposed to have it 2 or more year's ago) but I won't get it back until a little bit before Thanksgiving so I got a pretty long time. The thing about the 51 chevy is that there is NO interior, so that would be a lot of money I am sure... Unless I put some nice bucket seat's in it with cloth material which I would like to do anyways. I don't know though, I would like a car to fix up and make it a car to just cruise in but I would also like a full out rodder to make it haul some ass and some double wides, but either is good. I have been looking for Nova or Chevy II's and can't find any that are cheap the cheapest is a 4 door one with a 350 and all in it but who the hell fixes up 4 door nova's and take's them to the drag strip? I will get a picture of the Nova and tell me what you guy's think, I showed the pop's it but he didn't like the 4 door at all..... Oh yeah there are also some Baracuda Fastback's too but they are 9000 buck's but for a cuda that is cheap as hell..... I will find these three link's and tell me what you think. There is NOTHING out here though.
Ok I will be posting a bit more in order, tell me what you think for each one of these. They will be numbered. I am trying to find some car's or trucks in the 30's or 40's because that's my favorite years.... Thanks for the help as well.

I can't find the fastback one so this is all there is in NC that I found, everything else is too expesive, the red neck's wan't too much.
Ok here is a truck that I found that look's alright and is about 15 miles from me that I might look at. All it says is a 8 cylinder and it's only 2000 bucks so something must be wrong with it. I will have to call. Let me know what you guy's think on this one. I rather would have a car to rod out but this would be nice because I need a truck for my dirt bike that I will drive around all the time.

Real close to Charlotte, Waxhaw, Monroe, Matthews, I am about 10 or 15 minutes from the border of South Carolina. 45 min from Rock Hill or maybe even closer. Why?

If the wiring is still good it can handle 12 volts. You just have to change the bulbs When you change the engine the starter, alt and everything on the engine will already be 12V. That just leaves the radio heater fan and instruments to deal with. The Radio is easy to replace with a modern unit. The Amp meter will work at about half the amps that a 6V system used. There are resistors that you can wire into the other 6V circuits to make them function on 12V or they sell batteries with a third terminal that is 6V so you can run 6 and 12 volts from the same battery.
Another option is to toss out the instruments and make a custom dash panel with new gauges or adapt some from another car. They didn't say there's no interior. It might just mean that it's in rough shape inside.
Here's my low buck interior tip of the month.
If it has the original seats J.C. Whitney sells a nice set of custom fit tuck and roll seat covers that are more like new upholstery. The price is $240. I used them on a couple of cars and was very happy with them. They have patterns for almost every old car made and your covers are made to order not taken from stock. They also sell matching tuck and roll material to make door panels so your interior doesn't have to be expensive.
I used a white set in a 64 Fairlane and made matching door panels. I couldn't believe how many people thought it was a big dollar interior. I used black in my 56 Packard because it's easier to keep clean.
Now that you're a senior CHR member you gotta buy a hot rod.
Alright thanks a lot man for the info. I will see about that car. I really like the style because I was compairing it with the 49 Merc and they have a ton in common besides the grill and head lights. Also about the 6 volt thing and the 12 volt, I have heard about those batteries and all but what would I put in the 6 and then put in the 12? And yeah about me being a senior member already I do need a car. It's just that I don't have much money at all (only 600 bucks and sacing) and that's all the money I have even in my bank now because I can't get a job or nothing but also I don't wan't to just jump right in on a car because I wan't to be happy with whatever I get and I am really looking for a 49 merc or a 36 or mostly wan't a 37 chevy truck. My dream car is a 49 Merc with a blower and double wides and everything else and then my dream truck is a 37 chevy truck. I might hold off on that 51 though because I showed the pop's today and he didn't care too much for it and he is the one that is going to be loaning me the money so I can't really complain too much with him but he also will have to let me do what I wan't but in a way I also can't. I will see about it though, but on that 66 I wan't to go check that thing out because if I get a hot rod or not I still need a truck. The only thing I would do to the truck is drop the front, nice rims, tires, wider one's on the back but not too wide like slicks or nothing since it will be a every day driver, probably posi differential, dress up kit for the engine, change out the cams, lifters, etc (basically all the essentials for the valves and all.) But yeah I don't really know right now and I don't wan't to get my hopes up or go too far over my head if you know what I mean. I still got all summer to look for a car too so I might wait and look for another 2 or 3 more months until I buy one.

Yeah man, Gastonia is pretty cool. When did you used to live there?
I lived there about seven years ago. All my extended family still lives there.
Sounds good. Yeah 7 years ago is before I ever moved here to NC from California. Sucks out here though.
