Lowest VIN number?
I have a few questions on VIN numbers for old cars. When did they start the VIN number process? Who gives out these numbers for the manufacturer to put on cars? Maybe one of you knowledgeable people could give a thumbnail description of how this was established which would be interesting. Also, I wonder who on this forum has the lowest VIN number on their title?
The VIN numbers on my 28 Ford is A712138 and on the 32 Chevy is V169653.
I was just wondering about this.
Thanks,
Milner

Early days, those were just manufacturer's build serial number and for Ford, also the original engine numbers. Your '28 was by that s/n built in Dec 1928. My '31 has a 4754751 s/n for July 1931. Some good reading here:

From what I've seen the lowest VIN/ID is simply going to be the oldest vehicle with an OEM number as opposed to state assigned. Most back in the day went in order within groups - body style or engine size.
