Question for CHR Teens, and others too

We are starting a program in our street rod club (Gold Country Street Rods, Yuba City, CA). We have contacted the Auto Shop instructors at 3 local high schools and offered to bring our hot rods by and do a presentation for their classes. Our intent is to promote some interest in our hobby and give the kids some ideas of how the cars are put together and the opportunities that exist in the industry if they wish to pursue a career.

I have always been told that I should "Know my Audience" so, here's my question to the teens:

What do you think your fellow teens would like to hear about?

I appreciate any suggestions you can give

Being a teen myself (19) I think that they would like to see examples of projects (before during and after photos) to peak their interest, then you could go into how the job market is for people with these skills and talking about what type of employers they may end up working for, and possibly talk about the business aspect of it, for example running your own company, then talk about the schools that offer this kind of education. Also, you could suggest going out there and working at a shop or anywhere where they can get hands on experience with cars so that they can make sure this is the future they want because sometimes kids my age will look at something like this and think it is a lot more glorious then it realy is, especially with TV shows like Monster Garage and American Choppers, kids can get the wrong impression about what type of skill and work is really required to make a great car when all they see is the glorified aspects of the hoby that is shown on TV. Personally I think hands on experience is the only way to truely know if this type of work is something you will want to spend your entire life doing.

Hey Stu, sounds like a great plan to generate some young interest in hot rods. Congrats on taking the initiative, let us know how it works. Hope you invited the faculty too!!! Might have to stay after school and let them look too??? Just a thought. Anyway, thanks for doing something that we should all be doing, promoting the sport.

Well, Me being 15, I fit right in. The guys in my school would want hands on expierence, although all of us except 3 ( in my class )have done basic mechanics and know about cars, hotrodding and other generalized machine operations ( fork lift, FE Loader's, tractors and ATV's ). Some girls know most of this but, would want before and after pics cause they don't get interested in the hands on.

To be succesful in my school, you would have to give before and after pics and, hands on expierence to anyone who wants it, this could be as simple as changing a spark plug or, changing distributor caps or other simple things. When you leave you would HAVE to roast the tires driving out of the parking lot or, most of us would hunt you down for not doing so.

you would have defiantly need tha before, during and after pics to get kids motivated because some people cant look at a project for what it could be they just look at it for what it is
