39 or 40 Ford with wide rear fender pics?

Does anyone have any pictures of a 39 or 40 Ford with 3" wider rear fenders? I'm thinking about getting some for my 40 so I can run wider rear tires. But the rear of them look odd to me. I can't find any pictures on the net of cars with them on. Does anyone here have any? Thanks.

After talking to a couple of guys and looking at the pics of a local car, I think I'm going to pass on the wide rear fenders. They look ugly to me.

Yeah, I did a google search the other day when you first posted this and came up with nothing. I assume you're talking about the 40 tudor sedan in your avatar? You're right. Those wider rear fenders can look a little funky on the car. If you wanna go with wider tires, you can recess the inner fender back to the frame ( sort of a mini-tub) which will allow for some fairly wide tires. I made those mods on my 37 tudor sedan. Looks like it's going to work out well.

Yeah, I decided that $500 could go other places. I may mini tub it, but I really hate to cut into this car since it's so rust free. My biggest concern is trunk area. I need all the rom I can get with another rider on the way. LOL Do you have any pics of yours? Thanks Ryan.

Hey Ryan, I understand the dilemma but I was tired of hearing my back tires squeal on the inner fenders in a tight turn and I, too, wanted to run wider tires so I did some modifications that would remedy that without sacrificing much trunk space. Here are some pics so you don't have to hunt thru 95 pages of my thread.

So, Direct Sheetmetal makes a kit for this but it was close to $400 and required cutting out the whole inner fender so I made my own. I bought a couple of 36" 16gauge trailer fenders for $96/pr and a piece of 16gauge sheet metal. Here's how it turned out....I used Direct Sheetmetal's install page to help me figure it out Direct Sheet Metal Typical Installation

The trailer fenders were 8 or 10" wide and come with a rounded edge & a flat edge, so after I did some measuring, I trimmed out what I needed for the inner surface to be perpendicular to the frame rail. I used the rounded edge of the trailer fender for a more finished look.

After fitting the trailer fender portion, I cut the 16gauge sheetmetal to fit the curvature and welded it in. If I had a bead roller it would have been nice to roll a couple of beads in there for strength & design but the metal is thick enough that I don't think it really needs it. Since I wasn't cutting the the whole inner fender, I had to do some fabricating towards the front around the body bolt/rear seat platform. I left the "skirts" over the frame rails because I thought it might be a cleaner look through the spokes of my rims but I may have to trim it off. Not sure yet. I intend to cover the whole inner fender with a sturdy bed liner/undercoat which should give it a more uniform look.

I didn't give up much trunk space. In fact I think I could have still used the original back seat, but I opted for a different one. Hope this helps. Give a shout if you have more questions....

I adapted the rear seat from a '06 GTO. I had to make a few mods but it's really comfortable...seatswbelts7_1.JPG

Thanks, Ryan. It's really comfortable. Kinda makes me want to extend the steering column and drive from back there!
The width is perfect. I had to shorten the height of the seatback 1.5" and a few other tweaks. I also mounted the factory shoulder harnesses back there. I think it will be cool when it's all finished.

I don't mind at all. I have more pics of the seat & seat belt installation if you need them. You may come up with some better ideas along the way.
