Kurt, this engine has never been quiet.........it has been ticking since I first fired it up. I have torn it down twice and found nothing so I just assumed it was that some strokers have piston slap (that is what Scat told me). It sounded like loose valvetrain, but I checked and rechecked and it is adjusted right on.

All weekend I had the headers uncorked, so I couldn't hear any ticking. But for the ride home on Sunday I capped them up and it was ticking as usual. We started down the road, me following Don and Dan in the motorhome, and after a few miles I started hearing a pattern to the ticking, sounded like something hitting the tin shield that covers the flywheel. It got louder and louder and I signalled them to pull over. Before I shut it down it was very loud. When I started it to put it on the trailer (we removed Don's T and put mine on the same trailer) it cranked very slow, and that was unusual. The engine used no oil at all during the 250 mile drive, or around town.

Oil pressure and temp were fine, as was power. So I don't think it is rotating assembly problems. I am leaning more toward valvetrain......roller rockers, push rods, lifters, etc. Because this engine tucks so tightly under the cowl, I have to pull the engine to get the valve covers off. Not a big deal, I have done that before in about an hour. But right now I don't even want to look at the car, I need to get away from rodding for a bit. Fishing is looking better and better all the time.

I think I am going to build an engine test stand and run it there before I go to the trouble of putting it back in the car.

    Don
