Going back to a Y block in my 55 sunliner

I put a 351-W/C-4 in it and I never liked the way the motor ran so I decided to build me a Y block to put back in it,found a complete 56 292 4 bbl motor for 100 dollars and just picked up a 67 FMX trans for 30 dollars so as soon as I get my 66 F250 finished I will start on the Y block. I still need a couple parts like a 59 flywheel and a valley pan from a 62 to 64 truck so I can use a PCV valve plus a 57 to 64 distributor and a FOM air cooled bellhousing so I can make the FMX look like the original trans and get it mounted to the 292,the FMX has a rear pump so I think it can be push started in case of dead battery or starter problems and I can use the original type starter so it sounds like a Y block when starting. I am still thinking about what cam I am going to use and all that other stuff but got plenty of time as there is no hurry since I can still drive it.

I'd say good choice, Jeff! Love them old Y-blocks!!!! Way back, we used to put the 312 Thunderbird cams in the 292's....no idea what the specs were but they did help the power significantly!!!! Maybe one of the old tri-power intakes, too???????

I was thinking about a 3 carb intake but I want to keep it simple and use the 57 4 bbl intake I have,it might be a couple years before I get around to getting the motor in the car but I am going to get all the parts needed while I still have a couple old junkyards to get parts from.

I have two junkyards that should have what I need and will be going there as soon as the snow melts some,if I cant find it there I will post it.

Jeff, Glad to see someone still likes the Y-Blocks. Had one in a 56 ford station wagon with a 312 engine from a wrecked 57 T-Bird. :)

The engine compartment just does not look right with the 351 and even the original 272 seemed to have more torque then the late model small blocks that have more cubic inches.

I still have the 292 that was in the F100.It needs a rebuild,so its just sitting on the floor..I refuse to part with it,cos I will probably rebuild it and put it back in the truck one day,or find something else to put it in..even better.
