Bonneville. Who has been there?

A CB or walkie talkie is handy so you can walk and listen to whats happeneing on the track, times turned etc. (they also transmit on AM radio) because there is no loud speaker announcing system there.

You can't drive into the pits without a pit pass but you can walk through the pits, although the pits are over a mile long. All the racer are very friendly and the whole deal is very kick back. You can also go to the starting line and watch both the long and short course cars from there.

Most RV rental places in SLC know about speedweek and aren't very willing to rent a motor home for Bonneville, as the salt gets everywhere. But it don't hurt to try!

The night life in Wendover during speedweek is great, but there is also usually pyrotechnics, burning VW blocks and stuff at the "bend" that are
entertaining as well.

If you get a motel room or camp you will have the time of your life!

went back in the late 60's but we had tents to sleep in and had a great time. We tried to put a 60 chevy with a 348 in the fiel;d, but we couldn't for some reason or other but I'm sure everything has changed in the last 40 years.

Don, I had not thought about the salt factor. That is very good advice, and is a 'deal killer' for my cost saving idea.:(

So, I guess that salt rusts stuff, huh? ;):LOL: I'm from up North originally, so I know the answer to that one.

I've got this crazy idea rolling around in my head that the 46 would be perfect for this trip..........Bonneville in a Beater. I would leave it cosmetically the same, put a simple sbc or sbf in there with a later rear end so I would have good gas milage and reliability, and make the trip. A/C would be nice too.

Maybe I could convince some hot rod magazine that an article on the trip to the flats would make a good story. Maybe even take Route 66 some of the way. This is what happens when you leave me alone too long, I start to think. :D

Well, in any case I want to go, and thanks for all the input. Sounds like fun.

I had planned on going to speedweek 09 with a few buddys but
plans fell through. My daily was dead, one buddy was interning
in another state, and the snowball affect followed...
This year is a different story, all my buddys will be around and I
plan to drive the 27 out to the salt (forget the daily). Everybody
is down for camping on the salt to keep the trip cheap and simple.
So in short look out for my 27 on your way out to the salt, thinking
that the drive from Ohio is just about as long as the drive from Florida
so we will be changing some oil in parking lots :LOL:

Tazhog - I assume that "nc" in your location means North Carolina... Have you been to the Maxton Mile? I've been told that the east coast guys use that as a "test bed" before going to Bonneville; same car classes, etc. Is it worth the trip up there?:confused::cool:

Last night I mentioned to Dan that I think it would be cool to drive to Speed Week. He immediately started looking in the yellow pages for "Retirement Homes." I think I might have gone too far this time.:eek::D

Maybe I won't mention it again until I get the 27 done and start working on the 46 in earnest. I really do want to go though, but maybe flying in is a better way to go.

LOL, Yea the kids all think that their parents are regressing. But then all I have to do is remind him that he wanted to ride a motorcycle from Orange County to Cabo San Lucas and back for New Years (last year) for his "big 4-0" birthday.

When I had the 32 apart for paint this year I built a "receiver hitch" for the tear drop trailer. It will be going to Bonneville, so I can check off one more thing on "My things to do" list.

Hey Don ...... I too have this on my "things to do" list. I've already completed two X-country motorcycle trips ..... Bonneville IS next.

I'm going to go heavy duty on the 46 to try & utilize it on the trip.

We shall see.

You all are talking my neck of the woods. Bonneville is a great time. West Wendover Nevada has a couple of casino/hotels to stay in that are pretty nice and Wendover Utah (which really the same place just cut down the middle) has a few cheaper spots. It is very HOT in August, temps around 110 on the salt is common. Much cooler for the speed runs in October.
