Hello
Does anyone know the width of a Ford 1946 rear axle?

I have one sitting in my shop and would be happy to measure it for you tonight. What do you want, wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface or inside of backing plate to inside of backing plate?
I know it's a little on the wide side, compared to a 40 rear.
Don
The '39-40 are a couple inches narrower than the '41-'48's.
Wheel to wheel would be great. Many thanks.
Ok, I measured it for you tonight. Wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface is about 62 inches. Backing plate inside to backing plate inside is 53 inches. Hope this helps.
Frankly I was surprised it was as wide as that, but I knew it was wider than the other rear assemblies I have in the shop like 8 and 9 inch Ford and S10's.
Don
I had to go check the rearend that I took out of my 65 Ranchero which should be the same as the 65 mustangs. That measured 51 from back plate to back plate but it's only a 8 inch rearend. Thats why it came out, so I can go with the 9 inch and a 35 spline and a 4.56 gear. Kurt
Ok, thanks for measure it.
I wonder if 62” will be too wide for a fenderless ford 32 or does anyone have experience that it will look good?
My rear tires are 8.20X15 on 42-48 Lincoln steel wheels and I read that a suitable width for a 32 should be about 57”. I would like to avoid shortening and change bold pattern on another axle due to cost.

I think it might be too wide at 62. One of our Deuce guys will know for sure though.
