    !~Cadillac Questions~!

     



    Ok so I figured this was the best section to start my thread! Like I said earlier I dont know crap about these cars (1964 cadillac DeVille) and their mechanics so Im starting this thread to hopefully learn some stuff!



    1. I noticed the other day that in my door jamb there are some small vaccum hoses going from the body of the car into the door what are these for?Are my power windows vaccum controlled?

    2. As of right now the car wont start in park, but it will in neutral, so im assuming the car has a nuetral safety switch on it? is it the same type of thing later gm's had and is it at the bottom of the column right buy the fire wall? is it electrical or vaccum controlled?

    Here you guys go check out this site for the big caddy engines.
    You'll like them, they can tell you how to do any of these engine swaps.

    thanks but i dont want to do an engine swap, and that site didnt have anything for a 429?? thanks for the link though!

    I can't give you anything substantive, but I suggest that you "Google" for "Cadillac Forums", and go a'wandering in the ether. Older Caddies are a real niche item, and there are a lot of very knowledgeable enthusiasts out there, but finding them can be somewhat daunting. Another "drawback", if you want to put it that way, is that Cadillac was and still is somewhat ecclectic in their engineering, and always out in front, on the cutting edge so to speak; they did a lot of things that the other marques in the GM lineup did not, and sometimes they were subsequently integrated into GM's other models, sometimes not - the vacuum hoses in the door, for example; they might have shown up in Buick, and possibly Olds, but I can't recall anything like that in a Chevy. So, finding the info you desire may cost you a lot of effort, and frustration along the way, but I am certain that someone "out there" knows what you would like to find out. Best of luck.

    The vacuum lines going into your door are probably for power door locks if you have them. That's a neat ol' car. Nothing like a big old comfy boat for cruising.

    hey gents thanks for your replys Im still hunting a caddy forum, found some but they are focused around new caddy's! i hauled home another 64 deville this weekend, its a runner after a little tune up, but its smoking like a chimney I think the rings are shot but man she still runs strong!

    The '64 was a great year. First year for the turbo trans. The vacuum lines going into the doors are for the power door lock actuators. Your neutral safety switch is at the base of the steering column. It is an electrical switch but will also have vacuum lines that controls the park brake release. It's adjustable however might need replacing after all these years. These old Cads used vacuum to control a lot of systems, i.e. - A/C, cruise control, power locks, etc. These systems were not very reliable though, and as the car aged, vacuum lines became brittle and cracked and actuators leaked. Sometimes they were a pain to track down problems, especially the climate control.

    Scratch around in this stuff. You should find what you need to know.

    Also, try to snag a copy of Doc Frohmader's fine book " Big Inch Cadillac. It has bunches of fine information.

    If you have trouble finding Frohmader's book let me know and I'll look in my copy and try to find you some kind of an ordering address.

    The 429/472/500 engines have a huge amount in common (Doc's book will help you sort out answers to your questions about their specific differences).

    I can't help you with chassis questions because I took the engine and TH400 out of a trashed-out '76 and hustled the rest off to the crusher, thereby getting my lovely wife off of my case (she was sort of anxious to get that wreckage out of our yard).
