Flipper--when I shortened up the sedan body to make the cab for my roadster pickup, there were virtually no sub rails. I made the floor from 3/16" mild steel" plate, and welded in those 1/8" gussets to stiffen everything up. That way I get zero flexing, and the door gaps remain constant.
I'm currently using the thinnest masonite I could find. Don't use cardboard, humidity will eventually cause it to warp. That's the reason I'm replacing mine now. I'm also using 3M dual lock tape to secure the panel to the doors. Better than velcro. Found some on eBay. Hellovalot easier than using clips which I started to use and got into a nightmare trying to align them.

They sell molded universal panels and all you do is get your fabric and cover them.. They too recommend using the 3M dual lock tape.
Take care.
