Thread: another idea on a handbuilt hotrod body

I was at my grandfathers the other day and saw in his junk pile ( he collects and takes stuff to the shredders 4 extra cash ) he has a 500 gal ( I think ) fuel oil tank with 1 rusted out side ( the kind that look sort of egg shaped from the side, but have flat sides )... seems if that were cut in 1/2 lenthways, the top curve could be used for the 2 sides of the rear bucket, and the bottom could be cut in 3 sections and used for the cowl.. a little extra 16 ga sheet metal for the door section, and firewall and floor... pay my grandfather like $50 to cover it's weight in scrap and I could probably build it for under $100

I've seen stranger things done; look at the "Roofus" thread on here. That guy will be a genius if he can pull it off. Give it a shot, nothing to lose but time, MIG wire, and argon.

Our wives understand that they'e in the prescence of greatness. Your Roofus helped me start toying with this idea again. I bought a Model A frame last week and am picking up a straight six next week. After my 48 is done, of course.

I agree! youll never make it into the history books unless you do it. You never know, you could start a new trend.

I've seen a couple of hand built bodies on another site and was amazed at how they turned out. It helps to be a bit of an engineer or really have some talent of which I have neither. I'm like the others go for it your young, and you can gain experience to sharpen your skills. Good luck.

reminds me of the rods built from the external fuel tanks off of WWII planes.

some people look at a pile of metal and see scrap iron. i might see a car, a sawmill or even a fork lift. have built all three from scrap in my back yard. i am now in the process of building a hotrod from a yugo body 4" chop top the top cut off just behind the drivers seat a new rear window made from the hatch back. powered with a 4 cylinder datsun engine and changed to a rear whel drive. my biggest challenge is the steering. i think i have it worked out. not sure how long it will take with so many other projects going.
