How do I find out the year...?

Hi Guys- I have recently bought a '72 El Camino, it has a 396 big block in it. That year didn't come with it. The guy I bought it from said he "thinks" it might be from a '67 chevelle. What are the best and easiest ways to find out what year the engine is? I want to change my oil and looked on the oil filter and there are no markings, just a solid white oil filter, so that didn't help any. Any suggestions?? Thanks.
