Cragar SS wheels??

I have owned them a number of times on a lot of cars over the years. The last set I bought new in the mid 80's. Complete crap w pitting and white powder in the corners inside of three month's + Peeling by the following spring. They had minimal Home to show or drags to home milage.I cleaned w recommended polishes/cleaners,stored inside in unheated garage all winter from Oct to April + never saw snow/salt.
As I do w ALL of my custom wheels on my cars, coated w wax for the over winter storage + Still got the corrosion!
I swore I would never own another set. BUT here it is 20+ years later and I am into the nostalgia thing in a big way. So Now I am considering them again.
My question- Have they gotten any better in quality? Still pit, craze and peel unmercifully? Are the Keystones or Supremes any better? I want a chrome five spoke design. But NOT the AR TT styles (WAY too over done now for my taste, altho I love the look) and I despise any kind of billet alum wheel.

Have Some on my 1965 Mustang . The Chrome Looks good . But I just do not Like the Look of them . Can't Wait to replace them with Black Rims with Hub Caps .

I had a set on a 74 Maverik.. oh, about ten years ago. Quality was good. My only beef was that the lugs were too close to the center hub. Too easy to gouge the hub ( especially with a chatter gun )

Maybe I'll give them a shot again. I really like the looks but you have to put them on the "right" car IMO, mostly GM's and they are more from "MY" era. 1965-79 were the "hot" years for them. Tango, That you? Let me know when you replace them, might want em if decent. Maybe do some swapping. heh heh

Sure thing as I posted they are Ford Bolt Pattern . I think 14" up Front and Wider 15" in the Back . I just want the stock Look for that Mustang .

Most of the late Cragars since the mid seventies are uni pattern 4 1/2 to 5". Are the holes slotted at all? Talk to you about them over at home.

I bought some 2-3 years ago for my Chevelle. Still uni-lug and looked great no issues at all. A little dirty from our dirt driveway but as good as the set I bought 30 years ago and still have.

Far as the Cragar's, don't know if the quality has improved or not. Many moons ago I gave up on them too and went with the slotted mags and Torq Thrusts for the cars that justified the big $$$ for wheels. Problem is, I still love the looks of the Cragar SS wheels!!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:

I am there too, same issue,same story. Its on hold right now, But i think i'll give them a try again eventually They are actually more reasonably priced than new of the AR fives or Alum slots now..

ive been building up a little collection of the cragars lots of old 14 inch around not so many of the 15 inch. I have had good luck blasting them and painting them a good dull silver 2 stage, works pretty good for a guy on a budget The one i have bought i paid no more than 10.00 apiece for the 15 inch 8 inch wides

I've had them on my car for four years with no problems

Something about that Car ? I just had to have it . Factory 289 Hi-Po K-Code 4-Speed Car . Yes I have thought about installing a SB Chevy with a TH-350 Trans :HMMM: Thank God I stopped Myself :LOL:

Tango I'll be glad to take that old 289 and 4sp off yer hands when the 350/350 goes in. :3dSMILE: nothing worse than tripping over old engines and parts in the garage. ;)

I really Should think your offer over ? When I was a Young man I always wanted a 1965-66 Mustang 289-4-Speed with the Pony Interior . See my Dad had a Friend that Had what I think was a 1966-? Black Mustang Like that . It was a Built 289 4-Speed with a Big Gear in the Back . I did go for a ride in that Car and It was Fast . I heard it won Lots of Races around Town . Well Many Years Past but the Memory of that car did not . I saw the White 1965 Mustang For sale had to Stop ? When that Guy took me For a Test Drive **) I thought we where going to Die . That Nut did a Long Burn out and Hit 2nd Gear hard leaving some good Rubber marks . That Car run Good for a Small Engine :LOL: Well I bought the Car and Drove it Home . Now it Just sit's in the Back Garage . I do think this year I will change that Drag Clutch and Drive it . If not My Wife :rolleyes: keeps after me to Sell it .
