Ok, you all have shamed me into it!!

Watching all of you guys like Perley, Ken, Jim, and everyone else making such good progress on your cars, I finally got off my duff today and did something other than nap the weekend away. :o Hadn't been to the shop in so long that I haven't even washed my T after coming back from Turkey Run and getting it soaked in the rain that lasted the whole trip home.

I picked up a couple of parts for the T and my Dodge at Daytona, one of which was a dual carb setup I got from Vintage Speed. I knew eventually I would put some kind of multiple carbs on the T, and Vintage Speed made me an offer I couldn't refuse on one of their complete setups. It consists of a dual carb adapter, two rebuilt Rochester 2GC carbs, linkage, fuel line, and two frog mouth scoops. I know they aren't as efficient as something like a tripower manifold, or even the four barrel I had on it, but they have a certain old timey look to them that I like, so I went with it.

First thing I had to do was pull off the Edelbrock 600 that has been flawless on this engine. I really agonized over doing that because ever since I bolted it on over a year ago it has been absolutely perfect in all respects. I regularly get 25 mpg on the highway, and even got 30 one time coming from Billetproof. But it did look a little tame up there, even with the Stellings and Hellings knockoff aircleaner I had been using.

Putting the new setup on was a cinch, but took 2 trips to the auto parts store to round up all the little fittings and pieces I needed. It still needs some neating up to be done on the hoses and stuff, plus I have to fab up some bracketry to make my Lokar throttle and kickdown linkage work with it. But it fired right up and seems to idle fine. Being somewhat crazy, I hooked up a fishing line to the carbs and took it for a little spin. :D Dan thought I was kidding, but off we went, and when I gave the line a good tug it lit up the tires, so I think it will perform ok once I get everything dialed in.

While I was at Turkey Run I ran into "Skratch" who was pinstriping stuff there. For those who aren't familiar with him, he does work with Chip Foose on Overhaulin', and I understand he was the guy who started the show "Living the Low Life." Super nice guy and very talented. So I had him lay down some lines on my T, and I think they really finished it off. Don also had him do his T and now we have some artwork on our cars that we really like.

Here are some of the things he did on my T. In the last picture showing where he signed it, you can see the water spots all over my dash. :o Really a sin to have a famous pinstripers work on a filthy car. :o

And finally, Dan got in some time on his roadster pickup today too. He got the dash cut out and installed the SoCal dash insert and Stewart Warner gauges in it. I got him a set of Wilson Welding '39 Lincoln brakes for Xmas, and he now has to modify his spindles to make those fit.

Like I said, not huge progress, but at least two more projects are out of the way. Here are some pictures of Dan's dash.

Very nice work. Skratch realyy set the T off! On the lights and front I love the center design, almost like a cigar! The Dash is the bomb though, Congrats! The carb set up does look cool too! More vintage appeal. I like the fishing line idea. Great to see you posting again Don. One of these days when I'm off work for a few days, I've got to get back to the truck!:LOL:

Looks real good Don, The carbs, stripes, and Dan's dash. It must be nice to have warm weather so you can try out your parts. I got up this morning and saw a security light on the ground. At first I couldn't be sure if it was a light down or a pickup truck light since it was dark. The wind knock a tree over the power line and took the pole down. It was less then a week ago that we lost our power. One day it was 63 degrees, now it's back down to 30 degree's. Oh well enjoy your nice weather while you can. It may warm up here sometime within 4 months or so.

Don, I was checking out your T (and Jr's) at the Turkey Run (left you a card on the seat since you off playing elsewhere) and I thought it look terrific. But now that you have added the 2G's and the scoops, it's definitely looking even better.
I watched Skratch pin stripe another car when I was at the HAMB parking area, and he is without a doubt a top level striper. I didn't get to see him do yours, but he did a really superb job on it. Almost makes me want to get some nose and deck striping work done on my 57.:D

Glad to hear Dan's back on his rpu, I know he's anxious to get it on the road. :cool: Hopefully everything will be done in time for my visit in June.:eek::LOL::LOL:

Looks very good. Don. Amazing how some nice stripes finish it off.:cool: It'll be interesting to see how the twin 2's perform compared to the 4 barrel.

Did you get new hubs when you bought the 39 Lincoln brakes? Mine were undersize where the seal presses in. Had to skim .010 out to make them work.

I've been toying with the idea of running two of them on my tunnel ram for a different look... not real serious... just toying... be kind of fun to design a progressive linkage that goes 2, 4, 6 or 8 barrels... :whacked:

Richard, I see on the news where some of you guys are really getting hit hard with cold and snow. I remember those days all too well. Right now we are enjoying some pleasant days, but in a few months it will be back to sweating into our work. :(

Mike, yep, he has the Wilson Welding hubs inside his Buick drums. What did you have to shim and where?

The rear of the hubs where the seal presses in was undersize by .010. I had to chuck them up and bore them out to get the seal to fit. I compared them to a set of original hubs I had.

Of course I didn't find out until I was doing the final assembly with greased wheel bearings.:mad:

Don't know if this is a problem with all the hubs, but mine were both the same size.

If you haven't assembled them already, you might want to check it out. I guess if you've already put yours together, they were OK.(Pretty obvious)

25T, that would look pretty wild........you wouldn't see too many setups just like yours, that's for sure. :)

Mike, we already have the seals tapped in place, so I guess yours was a Friday afternoon set. Wilson Welding is a pretty interesting business from what I gather talking to them..........seem to be kinda out of their garage or a small shop. Bob is a really nice guy and even took the brakes I bought to FedEx for me so they would make it for Christmas.

John, yep, those carbs were what I was dragging around the swap meet area in my little red wagon. :D:D

Today Dan and I got a little more done on his car (I forgot my camera). We got the 40 Ford spindles cut down to fit the '39 Lincoln backing plates, and got a lot of stuff disassembled to take to the powder coater. We figure once we get the frame painted and start bolting on chrome and powder coated pieces it will go together pretty fast.........well, at least faster than we have been moving along lately. :o

Hey the new carb setup looks great Don. Are you running the scoops with the openings facing forward or to the rear? I see them both ways in the pics. If you don't feel like making one, Lokar makes a bracket for the Rochester carbs.

Dan's dash looks sweet. That's one car I can't wait to see in person.

PS - I didn't have any problems with the seals fitting in my Wilson hubs either.

Thanks Brad and Bill. I tried the scoops both ways and finally settled on openings facing the rear..........several reasons. Bugs and dirt going down the throats, and we felt the wind might catch the scoops and possibly dislodge one and have it come at me and the windshield like a missile. :eek: I've been hit by some bugs that were like birds, so I think a chromed scoop would smart a little. The Rochesters have a very shallow lip to put the set screws into, and we actually had to drill and tap new ones lower to catch that lip. We also dimpled the carb where the set screws go for a little more insurance. I was going to paint the insides to match the engine, but the red actually looks ok to me, sort of traditional.

I didn't know that about Lokar making a Rochester bracket.........guess who I will be 1-800 ing tomorrow? Thanks for the tip.

I'm as anxious as anyone to see Dan's car done too. Poor guy has missed 4 years at Daytona, and it looks like Billetproof in March will be tight too. He must have inherited his perfectionism from his Mom.........sure didn't get it from me. :o Luckily, Don is a lot like me in the respect we want things nice, but we also want to drive them in our lifetime. :LOL:

Nice addition Pops. I've been intrigued by that setup for some time, looks cool, hope it works well. I vote for painting the insides of the scoops to match the block. You need a chrome grommet cover for that PCV setup, if you can't find one I'll send you one. I know you like bling!:D

Another voice on the Wilson hubs thing, I've had two sets and both took the seals just fine, so I agree, must have been a bad hair day on those undersize ones.

The Lokar bracket is a nice piece, works well.

I'll be interested to hear if the carbs were set well out of the box. I just got a complete setup from Price today. It's a little showier than I normally do with the chrome plated carb bodies, but he was selling the whole deal at 50% off, so you take what you can get. The workmanship on this is first rate, and the linkage/throttle shafts work very smoothly.

Wow, that's too nice to put on a car Bob. :) Vintage Speed must be feeling the economy a little because they came down $ 200 bucks on the setup I bought and I wasn't even haggling........just standing there fondling their chrome goodies. I couldn't pass it up, and the carbs even have the right bases on them, one has idle screws and the other doesn't. Like you, I am really impressed with the quality of the linkage, carbs, fuel line, etc. You have to catch him at a show because you walk home with your stuff and the prices seem to drop a little.

Whatcha putting that sweet setup on Bob? It's about time you posted some progress pictures of your own........we always see those great cars in the background, but you are the Howard Hughes of hot rodding...........very secretive. :D

Brian, from what I am seeing on the news it looks like you guys in the North are getting hit pretty hard this year, winter seems to have come pretty early. But now you have time to play with your new tools and create some of those awesome pieces you make.

Earl, now that New Years is over Dan plans to really start hitting on his RPU hard. We sat and made a list the other night of stuff he needs and work yet to be done, and the list is not all that long. A little more welding on the frame and we can get it blasted and paint it. Then the shiny stuff (front and rear suspension) can start being bolted on. As for my '27, it is in line behind my Dodge truck. Same game plan as Dan's car, I just need to get the frame painted and start bolting it together for the last time. Then I will either do the '27 or else the little modified I want to build from Dan's cast off RPU body. I have all those neat '46 Ford drivetrain parts I picked up from Paul in Atlanta just sitting there begging to be used, but if I don't stay focused and finish the one car that is closest to being done (the Dodge) I won't get anything done.

Ken: I think the new carbs can't perform as well as the single 600 cfm Edelbrock, but I don't think they will be too bad either. As I mentioned, when Dan and I took that little ride with me using a fishing line as a throttle (:o), I gave it a little tug when we were moving and the slicks lit up and it got a little out of shape, so the bottom end seems to still be there. For some unknown reason my Edelbrock always ran a little rich, and the little primary 2 barrel might cure that. I just hope my headers don't start cooking because up until now the richness has kept them pretty cool. I thought I smelled a little burning from them when we got back from our little cruise, so I have to keep an eye on that.

We were going to head to the shop today, but both of us are just enjoying having a day off to lay around and do nothing. Dan is off tomorrow too, so he plans on getting over there (I have to work though :()

Don, I was interested in your mention of 25 mpg with the 600 carb. I have not followed your build very well so can you recap the driveline that gave you 25 mpg? Admittedly the light weight of the car helps a lot but can you review the specs of the car such as:

1. rear gear ratio
2. cu. in. of engine
3. cam specs
4. tranmission

FWIW - I have used several of the Edelbrocks and they all ran a little rich right out of the box. I always wound up rejetting 1 -2 steps lean on the primary side at cruise.

Also, I should have known that my hubs were the only ones shipped undersize!:rolleyes::p I just look at that stuff as another part of hot rodding. I've delt with lots of stuff over the years that's supposed to fit, but doesn't. Can be very frustrating sometimes, though. Glad yours were OK. I wasn't trying to slam Wilson Welding, just giving you a heads up.
