Trannie Problems
The automatic transmission on my Chevie started slipping recently (not going into gear on the start-up) -- the problem coincided with a radiator hose leak. Could transmission problems be caused by an engine overheat, or is this a deeper problem with the transmission? The trannie fluid and everything i:eek:s fine.

" not going into gear on startup " by that do you mean it takes a second before you feel it engage in gear when you shift into drive or reverse ? .. sometimes just a pint or so overfill mite fix that .. if it still shifts firm at 1-2 and 2-3 shift points it obviously does`nt have serious problems .. not likely that an engine overheat will damage the trans .. if you have slippage the fluid will scoarch pretty quickly ..

Change the fluid AND filter. I have seen a clogged filter (or bad filter to transmission gasket) cause the shifting problem you mentioned. Drain the converter too if it has a drain plug (most dont) Good luck. Don jr.

Thanks very much for the replies. It only skips when going very slow -- at junctions etc. The fluid looks clean -- it is very strange because i have never heard of the clutch going on an auto.

Old car lot remedy
As a last resort you can add about a shotglass of brake fluid to it...simetimes there will be an O ring leaking internally that can cause a slip and the brake fluid swells the O ring...I have seen this work many times..
