Just when you think you're caught up.........

I am finally getting healed up from a winter's worth of grief on medical things and getting going in the shop. Things were proceeding quite well on Tom's coupe......until my air compressor quit compressing....:( :(
The one I had was just a cheapy, 5 horse single stage that I bought used. Figured it would be plenty good for one old geezer doing a few hours work every day, but I was wrong.
So I bought a new 2 stage compressor, only a 5 horse but plenty of CFM and an 80 gallon tank. Good unit and got a decent deal on it from one of the local stores, the owner of which owed me a favor or two.
Anyway I thought I would clean out the little one car garage that is attached to my three car garage and put the compressor in there to cut down the noise factor. Hmmmm, no idea where all that stuff came from that was in the little garage!!!! Couldn't even walk through it!!!! Two days shot cleaning it out and hauling junk, returning parts I seemed to be giving free storage on to their respective owners.
Even though the two garages are attached, I figured a bit of insulation and some OSB (or whatever they call it) would further help with the noise factor and make the little garage a bit more usable then a junk repository!!!!! Two more days shot!!!!
Then once I got the new compressor set in place I figured it would be good to strip the old compressor and use the 60 gallon tank it had for additional storage. That and chasing all the parts to connect the two killed another couple days....
Well, the newly covered wall sure would look better with a coat of primer and a couple coats of paint.... another day gone!!
So, with the new compressor, extra storage tank, fresh paint, and a more usable space a guy might as well put up a bunch of shelves for storage, and redo all the plumbing for air in the big garage as well...Two more days gone....

Anyway, that's what I've been up to. Hope all these good excuses will allow Tom to forgive me a bit for being sooooooo slooooooow getting his coupe fixed!!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Not done with the little garage yet, but here's an in-progress shot of the new compressor and the tank off the old one.....and a lot of the related mess I still have to get cleaned up!!!! Going to be a busy weekend!!!! Going to rain all weekend, so no drag racing....Might as well get the "new space" usable I guess!!!! Maybe even fire up the grill and cook a burger or two sometime!!!!

Thats a mighty fine looking air unit you purchased, hope it works longer than the last.

Your new compressor looks really nice. Should give you all the air you need to run all kinds of different tools.

The biggest problem we have in our shop is keeping work gloves. We buy them by the 6 pack and there have to be 30 pairs floating around somewhere in there, but when we need a pair we either have two lefts or three rights. No idea where the mates go. :confused:

Yes I did!!!! I've been looking for the chute for my lawnmower that makes it a bagger instead of a thrower...Found it!!!! Haven't seen that for three years!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL: What I did find was a lot of junk that I'd been keeping for no reason at all... It's now being used as ballast in a Dodge minivan that's going to the recycler next week... With the price of scrap right now, that was probably the best find of all.

I thought I was the only one with the glove problem, I've got all kinds of right hand gloves but the left hand ones are gone??????

When I was painting a lot I would use my air compressor tank and trash can to fine tune my spray gun. I still have the 30 gallon trash can; there's lots of memories there.
About the coupe..... I've been so busy helping my son and working on my stock T that if you had it done I wouldn't have time to work on it anyway. I'm just happy that you are feeling better. Maybe in a month or so I'll bring out the chassis so we can bolt down the sheet metal and you can give me suggestions on how to complete the project.
When we haul in a car we fill the trunk and the insides with all kinds of scrap metal, dirt off the shop floor, roller blades, or anything that might have been in a car at one time.........

I think it's just like building a Hot Rod, Dave.... When you get started on the project all these other "gotta-do's" just pop up....and there ya go.......:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Sorta the same theme around here---we are moving from my commercial 10000 ft shop 22 miles from home into the 60 ft shop I added on at home in the 70s-----we have worked outta here since mid 90s so lots of vintage crap and valuable materials that need sorted into some kind of order---can't threw out or scrap any 4130, alum or titanium pieces of material

At least all the wiring is done and in place from before

Biggest realation iijust hit us as we don't have room for the family projects
1 cobra, 1 33 3 window, 1 cabrolet, 2 roadsters, flatheads, hemis, etc

So if anyone is wanting any of these kind of projects--PM me

Looking good there Dave. I went halfsies on one with my son. He builds custom guitars for a living so my half is in his shop. :LOL: We built a nice lil spray booth there too. He needed a good setup for all the spray and finish work. So he's all set. Most of my tools end up there somehow. :confused: :rolleyes: But at least I know where to look to find em. And to use my half of the compressor when I need to. :3dSMILE:

Oh and BTW.....if you come across any Ford 427 parts they must be the ones I left there. :HMMM: :3dSMILE:

Dave it is a great feeling freeing up space. Also glad to here your health is improving. I was worried when you stopped posting updates on the Camero project! Now that you have space, good weather, and a functioning air compressor, we'd like to see some updates!:D

Anyway, the new compressor is up and working! I set the on-off pressures at 125 on the low and 160 on the high. The compressor will put out a lot more, but who needs it? The extra tank extends the off time, and of course the run time as well. But like a car, longer run cycles and longer off time should help the longevity. I installed a small 10" fan above the pump itself and wired it to come on whenever the compressor runs to blow cool air over the pump. Probably not required, but cheap insurance. The regulators at the hose connections are set at 85 PSI. I also have the calender in the shop marked with an oil change on the pump every 60 days.....I'm going to call the manufacturer on Tuesday and see if they recommend synthetic oil in the compressor, it doesn't mention it in the papers that came with the compressor but I have noticed that many manufacturers recommend synthetic oil in their compressors.......

I installed 90 degree drain valves in both tanks with tubing and short pieces of hose clamped to it, and a barbed T fitting with a 3/8" ID tube exiting through the outside wall...I hate having water all over the floor everytime I drain the tanks.

I used 3/4" pipe for the air line (only 3 trips to the store to get all the right fittings, and have one hose in the little garage, and two in the big garage. I still am going to add one more shut off valve and regulator/dryer that will be dedicated to the paint guns. I'm going to use 1/2" hose and the oversized fittings on this to help with the air volume as all my guns are HVLP----my paint rep recommended this. I also put two water traps, down tubes with drain valves, on the main line.

Next on the list is an oversized air intake tube and filter for the air intake. Hopefully the whole system will work fine and last a long time!!!!

While you're out there maybe you ought to do something about that "canyon" in the floor...............check first, there might be a couple FE's at the bottom!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:
