Powder coating vs paint??????

I don't know. Ft Myers is like living in the middle of the desert when it comes to having places that can get any kind of work done. There is almost nothing here except for the beach. :rolleyes:

I guess I could throw it on my trailer and haul it to Tampa which is only a couple hours away, there is more up there. The local powder coater did a pretty good job on the wheels though, so maybe if we sandblast it, then DA the heck out of it to remove as many flaws as possible, and finally do what Ken has suggested in painting it when it comes back, that might work.

We have a little time before that stage, so I will snoop around and see what I can find locally.

So what is the procedure? You sand it with what grit and how extensively? Is it just a good scuffing, or more than that? What do you spray first, some primer or just the topcoat?

It sounds interesting. Our problem here in Ft Myers is that we have one powder coater to pick from.

I did look at it, you are right, really top notch work. Some parts of the country have lots of places like your guy and others are like Ft Myers.........:(


flh4speed. I'm not sure how many tubes are in it, Dan ordered it. It came from PRC and this is the fourth radiator we have ordered from them so far. I met them at Daytona a couple years ago and was VERY impressed. Nice people and their welding looks like a robot did it. The one in my T is so efficient that I can't get it over 150 going down the road. Just yesterday I took it for a little drive to the store and even sitting in traffic the fan didn't need to come on. I would recommend them to anyone. Here is their link:

Don-You do it just like you would on regular paint. Sometimes there is no orange peel at all so we just scuff it with 360 or 400 shoot it and clear it.
Powder coating get places you cant even see. If I lived in Florida, I think I would powder coat my powder coating :LOL:
I have screwed up before or made a change after it was painted and had to weld something, you can touch it up with Crylon spray paint and it is amazing how close it is.
If your wheels came out with very little or no orange peel it sounds like you have a good painter near you. If they know what they are doing they can make it look like it was sprayed. It's just temperature control and proper time in the oven.

Don, I would liked to have gone to the store with you yesterday, the car looks great.:toocool: I went to your gallery to see if you had anymore pictures, if you get a chance it would be nice to see more. I know how busy you are but I love the nice car pictures. I've said it before and I'll say it again you and your sons are doing some really nice work.

Ken, you may have given us our solution here. We could have it coated, then if we think the parts that show are still too rough we could sand and paint them. You are right about rusting here in Florida......our humidity is like 99 percent most days.:eek: I'll run all of this by Dan tonight when he gets home. We only have some steering box mounting, some boxing, and some holes to drill before we are to that stage, so we are probably a few weeks away. Thanks for that tip.

Richard, thank you. If you go to my thread, Project $ 3K, there are lots of pictures all the way through, and at the end of it there are some pictures of it finished. If you still need more, let me know. I lost lots of them in my computer crash, but am slowly recovering them from various places I have posted them.
