now thats a great picture
so whats the story with the commie MIG??
Shockwave Jet Truck, a triple jet-engine truck on a 260-inch (660-cm) wheelbase, holds the Guinness record for jet-truck speed at 376 miles per hour (605 kph). Driving on a runway, Shockwave races airplanes (Mig-17) that are flying above it at 300 miles per hour.

Here is a little video of it running against what I think is a T-6.
Pretty cool - except for the silly flaming stacks.:HMMM:
I watched a few different videos of it reving up before running. In one a person is standing just a few feet away trying to get photos, right before the truck accellerates down the strip. I imagine you would get singed or at least blown sideways by the afterburner jet wash as it passed! I think I'd give it at least 10-20 ft!
Thats not a fair race, the 1938 Texan T-6, a trainer can only go 200mph @ 5000 feet (170 at ground level) never was anything fast. just because it flies, does not mean it's fast.Quote:

The truck has 3 modern turbine engines, the Mig has 1 old school 1942-56 engine (the Mig-15 motor was used in Mig-17's), which did go 650mph, but it didn't accelerate as per today turbines.
It's still a cool picture!

Notice the red bull advertizement on the side! Those migs were on ebay starting at 10k a piece. I imagine that would just cover gas!:LOL:Quote:

Pat they were dumping them for awhile. I guess maintenance on the old ones was verty expensive. A friend of mine has a friend who bought one but is afraid to fly it and can't afford the maintenance it needs!
Ive seen that guy run at local airshows a few times, its pretty fun to watch.
that would be cool to watch!! cool pic anyway..
Off topic, but.. the Mig-17 used an afterburning engine patterned after the Rolls-Royce Nene, called a Klimov VK-1. Many of the Migs that are on the market are a Chinese version and quality is not great. Many owners have came to realize owning a Warbird is more expensive then cool. But if you got the buck$ go for it. If it needs maintenance, give me a call.
It came out with the VK-1, then in '53 thhe VK-1A with after burners, & the VK-1F, tested with the VK-5F but not used and back to the VK-1F.
In China, an initial MiG-17F was assembled from parts in 1956, with license production following in 1957 at Shenyang. The Chinese-built version is known as the Shenyang J-5
I like the early jets, I have a detailed scale R/C F-86 that is ducted fan driven, 5' long fuselage with drop fuel tanks. which cost 1/2 of what you say those Mig-17 sale for on Ebay. :HMMM: Which comes in kit form in 6 boxes.
At work we specialize in air foil, we make turbines for Rolls-Royce, lockheed, Garret-Airesearch, and our own turbos.

I would bet A Sabar would have taken the truck! Any takers?
Hey Pat
My freind Andre works the aerospace industry. He worked for Lockeed Martin, before moving to CT. and working for Pratt whitney. He's done a joint venture project with Rolls Royce as well. Small world. He's the guy who sent me the ebay listings for the Mig years ago! I'm not sure what they ever finally sold for, but thought at the time, boy it would be the ride of the lifetime to get to fly in a military jet like that or one of ours! Andre just finished working on the articulating nossle segment for the new US version of the Harrier. Cool stuff and way over my ability to understand. I regret not getting calculus in college, because I'd love to have been an engineer. Don't get me wrong I like what I do, but engineering is cool.
