What emergency stuff do you carry?

I'm getting my T ready for the trip to Billetproof and since Dan and I are taking only it and no backup car, I figured I better put some emergency tools and stuff in it, just in case. I don't have anyplace to put these things, except in the 12 x 15 x 3 inch deep compartment under the passenger seat, so I can't really carry a lot of stuff. My goal isn't to have enough tools in case some major rebuild is needed, but just enough to fix those little roadside problems that sometimes occur.

Because the build is pretty fresh in my mind, I pretty much know what size wrenches and sockets I will need to fix most of these things. For example, most of my suspension bolts take a 3/4 inch wrench, and several take a 15/16 incher. I am like most of us, and have drawers full of extra wrenches and sockets, so I am using those instead of my better, everyday tools. This way if someone steals them, or they get wet under the seat, no big loss. However, I didn't put any Japanese tools under there because if I do need one I want it to not fail me.

Here is the list of stuff I put together:

1) 3/8 drive set from 3/8 to 3/4. Rachet and two different extensions.

2) A couple of the more popular sizes of deep well sockets, including a 5/8 for my sparkplugs.

3) A 1/2 drive set from 1/2 to 15/16. Rachet and one long extension.

4) Open end wrench set from 3/8 to 15/16.

5) Combination wrench set from 3/8 to 15/16.

6) Two different size phillips screwdrivers and two different standard ones.

7) Vice grips

8) Water pump pliers

9) A small ball peen hammer

10)A Leatherman tool (for the knife and needle nosed pliers.

11)Allen wrench set

12)Roll of duct tape

13)Wire strippers

14)Test light

15)Flashlight

16)Test leads with alligator clips

17)Length of 12 gauge wire

18)Assorted wire terminal ends

I still have to pickup an extra fan belt, and put some fuses under there too. Surprisingly, it all fit, and I even had some room to pack some clean rags on top of it to keep it all from rattling around. I would love to be able to carry a quart of oil, and some spare water, but with the size of my T I am very limited. However, I feel much better now that all of this stuff is in there.

Here are some pictures of what all of that looked like, and how it went under the seat. Now Dan and I just have to find room for a few clothes and grooming items. :D :D

well, when I go on a 'trip'..

I grab my emergency box. It has an extra alternator, fan belts, oil, water, tool kit ( cheapie 100 piece ), rags, distributor module, tire plug kit, 12V air pump, fuel pump

You forgot the cell phone and credit card....................a little c.y.a for what doen't get handled with what you packed.:)

Does a thermos of coffee and an AAA emergency card count???? Used to always carry my favorite bail bondsman guy's business card too.... Really glad those days are over!!!! (Well, other then the occasional 135 in a 65 high speed awards....):LOL: :LOL:

Cell phone & AAA card; I'd rather tow it home and fix it than do it on the side of the road.

This thread has shown true experience in how to be prepared and/or not how to get caught without the right stuff. This begs a question; How is it these great kits and attitudes were developed? Experience possibly? Could be the start of a new thread.

I have a complete 3 drawer tool box that I carry, along with extra wire, duct tape, test light, fuses, aluminum jack, combo light/air pump/jumper and fuel pump. Seems everything we caravan places, someone loses a fuel pump. Fortunately, we all have sbc.

Any time you venture more than a few miles from home you run the risk of something breaking. I broke a fan belt on the Florida Turnpike one night and sat off to the side of the road for hours, waiting for a cop. (Pre cell phone days) Finally I gave up and started hitchhiking, and after a while a trailer truck stopped. After we were driving along for a while I heard a female voice from the sleeper behind me, there was his wife or girlfriend who had been hiding in there with a .357 magnum, just in case I was up to no good. :eek: Once they realized I was just a guy who broke down, she came out. Glad I wasn't a truck-jacker! :eek:

Fixaflat in a can is something else I like to carry. It has saved me more than once. Vice grips have been my friend many times too.

There is an un-named phenomena that occurs when you try to carry repair/spare parts. If you fuel pump breaks, you go buy a new one....and buy two....one for the repair and one for a spare. As of that moment, you will never need another fuel pump as long as you carry a spare. I had a car once that carried a spare fuel pump, starter, starter solenoid, distributor, fuel filter, alternator, and coil. None of that stuff ever broke again....

assortment of sockets, wrenches. Small hammer, zip ties, wire crimpers. As far as parts, spare fuel pump, ign module & pickup coil. While i was building, i wrote the part #'s for the hoses, belts, bearings, etc. Never had to use it, but....:cool:

I carry a 3/8 set, couple wrenchs, couple screwdrivers, rags.
I have never needed anything more, I quess mine are dependable, I drive them anywhere, anytime. :HMMM: :3dSMILE:

Looks like a good list. Add some zip ties in various sizes, others have already suggested the AAA card and can of "flat tire". I also carry one of those little air compressors that plug into a cigarette lighter. Or a jump box, some of those have the compressor too, but it does not look like you have room for that. Jumper cables might be good though. One more thing, a spare key!

If I am going on a long trip I usually carry a tool box with all of the popular wrenches, set of screw drivers, allen sockets, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets and sockets, needle nose pliers, channel lock pliers and standard plyers, hammer, wire strippers, wire, butt and other wiring connectors, electrical tape, duct tape, wire ties, 1/2 & 3/8 " torque wrenches, aluminum racing jack, tire repair kit, flashlight, and assorted other necessities. And last but not least, my cell phone and charger, my Fellow pages and my AAA card.

On lesser trips, I take just the last three items. :3dSMILE:

sure wish i could take mine on a long trip! but 4:88's and a 4500 stall sure dont like the highway :eek:

And you will always be missing that one critical tool you will need for the roadside repair.

One thing I've added to my emergency box is a small sissor jack that I bought at the Pomona Swap Meet. It's an O.E. aluminum jack out of a some year (?) late model Porsche. Very small, light in weight, and well made. Just low enough for my dropped front axle and goes high enough to reach the four bar bracket on my rear axle. Jumper cables should be "a must have" item.

How about a pair of stubbie screw drivers? I have a very small slime tire kit, made for motorcycle riders. Harbor freight sells them. It has a small 12volt air compressor and a bottle of tire slime plug repair. Also maybe a pair of jumper cables, you could make your son wear these as jewelry. I thought you Guy's decided not to go, what changed your minds?
It wouldn't hurt to have some security device and maybe a breaker bar. A laser pointer from the safey of the hotel room would unnerve most thieves when it shows up on their forhead in the middle of the night! Have fun and take a lot of pictures!

Well, as usual, I went off half cocked and later changed my mind. :o I was trying to get an answer about being able to transfer a registration I wanted to buy from another member and wasn't getting any answers. Come to find out I was asking the wrong people, the local club is only hosting the event, the decision makers are at Billetproof.com. I spoke to Alan at BP the other day and he could not have been nicer and is taking care of the re-registration for me.

Plus, when I proposed to Dan that he and I go to Daytona instead he flatly refused. He filled me in on what kind of cars will be at BP (the kind we like, oldtimey stuff) so that cinched the deal. It is also a shorter drive by about 2 hours each way.

If you remember the character "Roseanne Roseannadanna" that Gilda Radner played on Saturday Night Live, she would go into this rant about something and then when Jane Curtain would correct her she would say "Oh!! Nevermind!!" That is kinda me........I blow up about something and rant for a little bit, then when I cool off I realize I was wrong.

It depends -

Family car/truck - not a lot since so much now needs a special tool - jumpers, pair of pliers, small crescent, couple of screwdrivers, flat fix in a can. My truck does get one special tool though - a nice l-o-o-n-n-g breaker bar and impact socket to remove and reinstall those 8 lugs per wheel at 150 foot pounds:whacked:

Rod - it gets a minor tool kit, possibly only enough to do a 9" diff change out, valve job or bearings:LOL: :LOL:
