Not that I am a big fan of the mag, but Hot Rod Magazine has a nice article on the gasser era in it's October issue.

Gassersrule is correct. There were lots of 283's and 327's around in the 60's. I may be corrected, but I think the big block 396 did not even go into production until the very late 60's and the 454 after that. I do know that lots of guys were using Oldsmobile motors and rear axles in those early to mid 60's Gassers.
