Interesting on the X code thing. With cougars there was a X code option in 68 only. 390 2v 10.5:1 comp and 265hp @4400, 403tq @2500.

I could be wrong on it being XD, I know if it's expeiramental, most likely would have an x at the beginning of the casting number, could be XE D6, D6 just to date 1966.

The X is the engine in the vin and doesn't stand for experimental. It is the Premium fuel 2V- 390. Which is the 285 horse and the one I had in my Torino many years ago. Same engine code applies to Mustangs. And according to http://www.vintage-mustang.com/topic...de/decode.html the Y code was the only 2 barrel 390 offered in the Mustang. The Y code 390 was a 2V and for regular fuel.

I found the shipping papers from when the Navy shipped my 68 back from the Philippines in 73 and that got me started looking on line. Found the x code in the Vin.

Of course, if your talking casting numbers, the X number only showed up on non-production parts such as on the 427 SOHC, the 302 tunnel port Trans Am series motor and the 427 Tunnel Port motor. But they never were normal production part.
