Please help! Radiator fan not working!

....Hi All, the fan on my radiator isn't working. To trouble shoot I; 1) direct wired it off of the alternator hot wire & ground to the chassis & it works. So the fan is good. 2) wired around the switch & it didn't work so it's not the switch. 3) checked the fan fuse & it's good. BUT, when I turn it on it makes a 'beep' sound from under the dash. It also has what I believe you call a relay {a black square box thing that plugs into the fuse panel}. I remember from my Firebird that you can check the relay with an amp/volt meter but I don't remember how. So I guess my questions are; 1) how do I check the relay with my amp/volt meter? 2) any ideas on what my problem is? 3) for the mean while I'm just going to direct wire my fan to work off of my alternator hot wire {w/ on/off switch}. Will this hurt anything? THANKS to All ;) Bill

I would post this on Hotrodders.com,Doc is fantastic at electrical problems he really helped me out.Because of the fans initial amp draw I would not want to run it without a relay for long,I am sure he can give you the procedure you need to make the check,he always answers promptly as he spends a lot of time on site.Good Luck!:)

Replace the relay. The fan requires heavy gauge wire to operate, the high voltage part of the relay has it, the low voltage side doesn't. The beep would indicate the relay is trying to work, but the switch isn't closing to complete the circuit on the high voltage side of the relay....

.....THANKS Jeff, Dave & Denny, I will get another one. The wiring kit is manufactured by Haywire, the actual relay is manufactured by Cole Hersee Co. { www.colehersee.com }, part #RC-400112-NN. I wonder if they have a similar one at the local auto parts store? I'll find out tomorrow..... Thanks again, Bill

....THANKS! ;) well it's not the relay so for a temporary fix I just wired off of the battery {w/ 10 gauge wire} to the fan..... Bill
