my friend's fairmont did the same thing, only that it wasn't the batt. the cable going from the solenoid to the starter was frayed and shorting itself to the frame, (check the cables too) also, the starter didn't even click or a click from the solenoid, so the solenoid was bad too(check solenoid) after that it started right up. so tally it all up, while checking the batt, check everything going from it to the starter, a simple thing can be the problem.
