Hey guys I wanted to get a hand count of how many guys have shaved door handles on their rig. i know its illegal in every state (especially WA). but I really want to shave my door handles, if this is a stupid idea as in major tickets. Please i need some experince on this issue.

I'm Doing Mine And I Am Also Suiciding The Doors When Did It Become Illegal In Wash Or Did They Just pass It Cause I know A Lot Of People Up North That Are Going To Be In A Lot Of Trouble If They Did. It not Illegal in every state arizona it's not course we realy don't have many don't laws here either well maybe phoneix dose but not down where Im at
Where did you hear it was illegal in every state?
My 30 A-bone had no door handles.
My 72 Chevy Pickup had no door handles.
I see hundreds of cars at every show and rod run with no door handles.
I never had either car questioned.
you can do it on antiques cars in va, but not the cars that has to be st. inspected. :eek:

That does seem odd. I know in NY there are inspected cars here that get door handles shaved all the time. But, if you Do find that it is illegal, how about AMC door handles? their flat, and their legal. Also, you can get them in steel from your local dodge dealer:)
I have shaved handels on the 40 chev, and my 49 chev, and I shaved the handels on the 82 elcamino. On the ellky I am trying something different. I'm useing Pop machine locks. Stick the key in ,turn and the door opens. An after thought was to resess the locks flush with the doors:rolleyes: Anyways it still look neat and different.
in va. its has to be how ever it came from the factory to pass the st. insp. if it didnt have door handles from the factory then you dont have to have any to pass va. st. insp. the reason you can get by with it on antiques is because they do have to pass the yr. safety insp. :HMMM: :DQuote:

Well i called the state patrol office a while ago and they don't want you to shave your door handle. The reason that they dont want you to is what techinspector1 said. But, screw them im gonna do it.

Have you seen non-antique VA cars rejected because of shaved door handles?
I see customs all over Tidewater - more modern ones, that is - with shaved doors.

are you saying a toe button under the car is the same thing as a opening device similar to that installed by the vehicle manufacturer ? i dont think so.
yes henry, i was a st. inspector for 25 yrs and i turned a lot of them down. some called the st. police on me and ended up having to put the handles back on. just because you can get a sticker dont mean a thing. if you think youer right, and have a veh. with a st. insp. on it not equipped with a handle or opening device similar to that installed by the vehicle manufacturer them you name the time and place and ill call the st. police and have him check your veh. and lets see if it will pass. i just called and asked about my s10 and the answer is no you cant. the reason behind it is the same reason as tech. gave for the drag strip.
From a safety standpoint, what is the difference between having shaved door handles and having door locks that automatically lock as soon as the car is in motion? I think many people lock their doors when they drive anyway. To me this is a useless law and I'm sorry Richard unless you make them disable automatic locks at Firebird, it doesn't make sense there either. I agree that on a pure competition car they are not practical, but in the street classes if automatic door locks are allowed, shaved handles should be too.
By the way I have never heard of anyone havig a problem with shaved doors handles in California. Believe it or not!

No, I wasn't saying anything about door opening devices such as a toe kick or electric switch. I just wanted the opinion of someone like you who had a lot of experience in the area. Thanks for the input.
I wonder how these guys with their custom pickups, etc., with shaved door handles get by with it around here.
you can get a sticker put on anything if you know somebody that don't care about their st. insp. lic. and most st. police will leave you alone until someone report you and them they will make you comply. i wouldn't take the chance on having to change it back when i got caught a yr. from now. i ran smoked lic. plate covers on my trans am from the time it was new(1993) in Richmond until last yr. after i came to the boonies, and then i get a ticket for having the covers on. it don't take but one prick trooper to mess the whole deal up.Quote:

lt1s10, What's your opinion on whether '28 inner roadster handles without outer handles will pass? My title says'29 when the roadster first had the external handles, but it would be easier to install '28 latches for which you just slip a finger through the side curtain. But if necessary I will put the external '29 handles on, it's just another hole to drill and worry about fracturing fiberglass. I guess you put tape on the glass to avoid chipping around the edge?

So what this comes down to is you have to have factory design or similar door handles on your car in some states? I think theres an issue there. Seems to me that as long as you have some type of manual handle that works properly it should pass. Its like saying "Sorry, i cant pass it. They came with single piston disc brakes and you have dual" I still think the AMC paddle handles would work:(
Call me odd, but I like the looks of the Monte Carlo flush mount door handles. Camaro might have them too. I'm thinking of putting them on the "Z" if I can maybe find a couple wrecked doors. CUt the door skin around the handle to graft to the "Z" door. Wouldn't be a shaved door, but it would be a little different from the plain chrome pull up bar.

Yup, I've seen those too. They are purdy slick, but require lexan. I'm going as street legal as possible so I'm going with OEM glass. I just noticed the handles on the wifes 03 Monte and thought to myself, that would be a subtle change I could make that would be a little different. I haven't looked into the linkage, but I'm sure it could be adapted easy enough since they both open with a "pull up". Also considered corvette taillights but that one I'm not so sure about. When it comes to body changes, I'd like them to be just a little different. So people have to look twice and ask themselves is that OEM or is it memorex??????:LOL:

don, if your gonna get a st insp. on your 28 i wouldnt worry about a out side door handle. drop the top and pull up into the shop like you own it. they will be so impressed with it they wont think about no door handle. hopefully they'll check the safety items close though. go by and see your buddy joe, he'll know someone that will put a sticker on it. once you get you sticker then i dont think the law would bother you on that older car. most of the inspectors wouldn't know that to check on a 29 no how.Quote:

it don't have to be just like, it has to similar to. a electric push button under the car , behind the mirror or behind the lic. plate is not similar, a lever in the trunk or under the hood is not similar, but most any push or pull manual devise in the vicinity of where the factory normally put them would be ok.:DQuote:

the door handle set up would work ok in va. you can use the lights in va. as long you dont cover them up. i put cabby tail lights in my s10 and i cut a cat eye for them to shine through. i just paid the ticket and had to cut my tail gate up, just because i had about 20% of the light covered up. passed st insp. but the trooper didnt like it. had driven it like that for 2 yrs. all you have to worry about is that blower. :CRY:Quote:

I ask around everytime I see somebody with a blower. No one has had a problem. One guy even got stopped for speeding and they gave him the speeding ticket but not a word about the blower? Hope it stays that way. Like you said it only takes one Barney Fife to mess it up. Around here if they know you and you don't give them a reason.....they are purdy' good about leavein' ya' alone.Quote:

Another tought I had for the tail lights is to french them in about an inch and put all red lenses in all four. Then put small back up lights in the lower panel.
i know and id pay the fine if i could keep on riding, but once you get caught then you have to change it. i run a blower in richmond for 15 yrs and never got stoped, but they came out with a height law above the hood in 1990 and my shop was doing about 600 st insp. a mo so i had to take it off or loose my shop lic. the tail lights i ran for 2 yrs and was stoped a few times and nothing was said about the lights, but then they sent this new hot shot trooper in that was gonna clean this place up, so he gave everybody a ticket for something for the first few mos. now you cant find him if you needed him. :rolleyes:Quote:

my wife has a jeep, i have a s10. i checked but there was nothing else to drive. i couldnt cut it out 100% no how so i only cut a little more out and am waiting for him to stop me again but i think hes gone. havent seen him lately. he was just making a name for himself.:mad:Quote:
