I installed fiberglass running boards and pressed steel running board supports on my roadster pickup, and quite frankly I was "underwhelmed" with their strength and rigidity. In order not to stall the "build" phase of what I was doing I used them anyway. I have now went back to revisit this situation, and here is what I did. I went down to the local steelyard and bought some 2" x 1" x 3/16" channel. I cut peices of channel long enough to run from the end of the pressed steel running board supports back in to a point where the other end of the channel was flush with the inside of the cars frame. I mounted this channel with the toes pointed up, straddling the pressed steel supports from underneath. I then cut a short peice of channel to run from the far end of this channel up to the frame, and tack welded everything in place with the running board still in place, bolted to the wimpy pressed steel supports. Then I cut a peice of channel and mounted it with the toes down, running between the 2 support brackets, along the underside of the outside edge of the fiberglass running board. Everything was then clamped with vice grips and tack welded to the pressed steel supports as well. In the photo I have removed the running board to weld everything solid. This bracket is incredibly strong now, and I won't worry about big guys like myself stepping on my running boards.
