......well, this brings up the topic again about what qualifies as a muscle car, huh?
As I said the other night that I believe anything prior to '71 qualifies. So I'll vote for the Ford Cobra's. Light body with 427 cubic inches.... or the Hemi Cuda???.... hummm, are we talking the actuall overall weight or the best power to weight ratio??? Bill....
hmmm, now that I see what YOUR driving King Cuda, I'll bet your right up there with the 'best' of them!!! A 440 in a light weight Cuda ;) ....
427 cobra, hands down :3dSMILE:
I'm thinking the Sunbeam Tiger came in 2nd.
...Yeah the Sunbeam Tiger! I was thinking about that one. I used to hang out with a guy that had one. What motor was in it? I remember it had a small block but don't remember. What it was? 289 Ford? 260 Ford? Help my memory ;)..... Bill...
bill, the mk I and mk II had a 260, the 67 Mk IIB (last year) had a 289. They would fly. Especially if you put in a decent cam and a 4 Barrel and intake.
Thanks Duane, Yeah my memory of the '60's is not so good. So it either had a 260 or a 289. I do remember it was fast....... Bill....
I agree with Charlie, for a regular production muscle car, the 66 Nova with 327/350 hp would be my pick. I believe they ran NHRA A/Stock, so that would be an indication.
Except for the factory super stockers, the the Hemi Cudas were not all that light. Probably between 3300-3500 pounds
Pat
Streets, I don't usually disagree with ya, but the Factory 64 Thunderbolts came with a 427 highriser, and though they were light weight, they weren't that light. Closer to 2800 pounds. They only made 100 of them and I doubt very many of them ever made it to the street. Now the A/FX cars might have been closer to the weight you mentioned and I know some of them had SOHC motors, but those were not production cars.Quote:

I raced many of the cars we are talking about and since I don't consider the Thunderbolt a production car.....I can tell ya that I had more trouble with one car than all others.......the Nova with the Nascar 396 in it that baby could fly.and wasn't very heavy either. 396/375 made for a very nasty car':whacked:
I'd have to put my money on a Griffith. They were only made a couple of years. They came with a 289 Ford engine and were downright scary. A friend had one with the 271 horse 289. Probably the ugliest car ever made but it was awesome.
They were later made with Chrysler engines.
Just a new guy putting in his 2 cents.

72 Nova, Street/Strip 406, 700R4, 4.11 12 Bolt
I agree with Troglodyte that the big block Nova was fast, when done properly. But, they were not light. My COPO weighed in at 3602 lbs. Measured on accurate scales. About two weeks after I took delivery. Had to really put her on a DIET!
I drove an Iso Griffeth once. MoPar powered one. It was verrrry impressive.
Hey, don't I know you????Quote:

Are you that guy with the big badd Yellow 1960 Chevy that runs up at New England Dragway. The guy that's going from a laughing gas 406 to a huge big block?
The guy that lets me park next to him sometimes?
The guy that in spite of himself has a son that is a good kid?
No I don't know you.
:D
Hahahaha...... sheesh. See 'ya in the spring!Quote:

MGB V8.THEY USED A 221 ALUMNIMUM BLOCK
What did the 68-70 AMXs tip the scales at? they couldnt have been to heavy. probably under 3000 easy:)
The "LO23" code 68 Dodge Dart hemi was only offered to drag racers so as to see they went straight into competition. These were light and bad BUT probably don't qualify. The other however that comes to mind was the Dart GSS which was offered by Norm's Spalding Dodge in Chicago. It had a 440 in an small A body.
Production car available in the showroom would certainly leave out the Thunderbolts. I would have to wonder what the '63 Nova SS with the 283's weighed??? Friend of mine has one he's resto-rodding, seems like a fairly light car. Anybody remember what the little Dart GS or (GT?) with the 273 CI motor weighed in at?? If ya wanna count one off creations, then there's a guy in Sioux falls with a Street Legal (well, it's licensed and has lights) Sprint car, can't be over 1700 lbs. Moly Chassis, aluminum block and heads!!!!
Theres a guy that runs around every once in a whail with his street legal modified class, dirt racer.Quote:

Hmmmm. Interesting the '67's looked to be so much bigger than the '63's and '64's. Not being a chebbie guy, I can't say that I have ever spent much time around either model. I was just going by what "looked" to be lighter, not basing anything on fact or personal knowledge.
Charlie, a few decades back a friend of mine had one of these little darts, think it was a '64 (?). Had a bit of cam, fenderwell headers, 600 Holley, and a 4 speed. The thing ran really strong. Funny how the mind works, hadn't thought about Paul's little dart for ages, then for whatever reason this thread brought it back. Can't remember what I had for lunch but I remember a car a guy I haven't seen for 30 years had in 1968 !!!!!!!
Im really surprised & frankly glad that nobody has started argueing about what is & what is not a musclecar.
Maybe they need a Hot Rod Debate Forum.
................or maybe a hotrod hothead forum???? Life is far too important to be taken seriously!!!!!!!
Dave agreed, but you know what Im talking about, the ones who take stuff to literal..."camaros arent Muscle cars , there Pony cars" or " Vettes asre Sports cars, not muscle cars".
I know a guy with a 67 Chevelle with a 427...it was originally a 283...so he says its a street machine, but not a muscle car, cause it wasnt an original big block car
Thanks for the AMX info tech:). So does anyone actually have an answer?

The 62-65 Nova body style might have been a little lighter than the 66-67s. But Chevy did not put a V-8 in them until 64 I think and then it was a 283. And while it wasn't exactly a slouch with that motor I would not really call it a muscle car. The early ones are real easy to drop a small block into, all you needed was the 64-65 mounts. In 66 they put the 350hp 327 in them with a 4 speed and a 12 bolt rear end. Now that was a Muscle Car, NHRA A/Stock. One of Bill Jenkins early Grumpy's Toys was one a dem. I had a '63 that I put a 400 Small block in and it was a great budget racer. It was right at 3000 with me in it, and it had frame connectors and a 6 pt roll bar.
Pat
Looks like so far it's the 66 chebbie deuce and 2921 lbs, drg.
Stepside, I know what ya mean. I get so fed up with catagorizing and labeling on cars !!! Last summer at a car show, some clown took a swing at the guy doing checkin cuz he wanted to put his camino in with the "muscle cars" and not have to show it as a "truck". It was resolved when they told the idiot they didn't want his camino in the show at all and he should leave !!!!!
Ford Mustang II. 2,669 lbs. curb weight in 1978, with the 302.
(So much for not arguing about what is and isn't a muscle car.)
Not the lightest but i beleive early chevelles were around 3100lbs and in 65 it had the 396.
what about the AMC rambler "scrambler" weighed in at just 3000 and sometimes under that:3dSMILE: :HMMM: of course i heard some guys talking earlier about the cobra well thats a sports car not a muscle car  just me 2cents..........scooter
