Roll Pan Fabrication

I needed something to do for the rest of the week, while I waited for the fiberglass to set up on my reconfigured hood, so I went back on to a project that I started about 2 months ago. The roadster pickup looks pretty good from the sides and from the front, but something was definately lacking from the rear. I made up a pattern from heavy cardboard and had my local sheet metal shop make me up a rolled pan to go between the valances below the box. I just about fainted when he charged me $80 for a simple peice of rolled 14 gauge sheet. Then I came home and checked out the Brookville catalogue, and seen that they wanted over $200 for exactly the same thing. This made me feel much better. I thought that since I was going to need a place for the license plate, I might as well make up a frenched license plate cove, so I bent up some scrap #12 ga. that I had left over from something else. I fired up my mig last night, did a bunch of grinding tonite, and Voila!!!! Brookville eat your heart out. I have a neat looking rolled pan with a home for my license plate, for about $80 and 4 hours spare time labour.

Brian, Great Work! I am enjoying your buildup even though you are always ahead of me. I too am learning about today's prices. After checking around four shops, all in the nearby Hanover Air Park which is an industrial park next to the Hanover Air Port just north of Richmond, I finally got my brake lines flared. First I found a great shop doing a restoration of a Model A coupe, then two NASCAR-type garages and finally York Sports cars which fabricates "replicars" specializing in Cobras and MG-TD replicas built on VW chassis. Anyway York did the flares for me after I broke a cheapo flaring device I bought from Speedway and hopefully I will finally move forward after taking far too long to do the brakes. I will be interested to see how you attach the roll pan.

Looks good man! 80 bucks is really cheap, seen the prices on metal these days? It's been going up a ton and really expensive now. 80 bucks is really cheap. The license plate looks good too man. I am going to make my dad a roll pan for his truck just like that but no license plate box I don't think.
