John (Johnboy) Norton's Setback

Just had a message from Rosie Norton, SWMBO as John refers to her, letting me know that John is in the hospital with a broken hip. No info on how he managed it, only that he'll be away from his "'pooter" for a while, so incommunicado to the rest of the world.

Told her that I hoped he'd be one of those who is walking around a few hours after the surgery and booted out of the hospital in a day or two, but then the task will be to keep him tied to his "comfy chair" and listening to the rehab folks about letting things heal. I'll update if I hear anything else before he's on to tell the tales.

Terrible news. I hope the surgery and recovery goes well, as I'm sure everyone else does.

Damn that sucks. Here's wishing you a better birthday. Who's gonna do happy birthdays now.

I've not heard anything else from Rosie, but one of John's Maverick mates let me know that they had John using a walker and he had a fall and hit his head, so will be kept in the hospital for a while longer. That's the extent of the information provided on John, but I got a second message just now that Rosie is hospitalized too, with a badly swollen leg. Again, no other details, but John has mentioned her having some issues in the past year that limit her energy and mobility to the point that he got her a little scooter to get around better for her last birthday.
Prayers for comfort and healing for both of them.

I did get a nice note from Rosie after posting the above update, reporting that John's surgery had gone well, that they've had him up and walking, but that "...because of his delirium, he is quite La-La..." about his hip injury and other events. No mention of any fall, so my thought is that one of his friends may have called him, found his responses strange and told others "It's like he fell and bonked his head!!", which may have started the story (just me thinking about the different stories, nothing else). Doesn't really matter, Rosie says that until they figure out what's got him confused, he'll not be going home.
Hoping they find a chemical balance issue or a reaction to some medication, and get them both fixed and back at the ranch!

I received a note from Rosie a bit ago. She did end up in the hospital too. John's hip is doing fine, but his delirium is not gone yet (her words), and he has good days and bad. Their kids & friends have been bringing him to see her, and he's happy to know where she is, and to get to come see her. "It's been a very exciting two weeks, to say the least - NOT!!", again Rosie's words.
I replied with hopes that the "delirium" is due to anesthesia or pain meds, and that it will continue to clear at an accelerated rate; and that her doctors get her issues addressed to get her out and about soon, too!

I received a message from Rosie/SWMBO saying that John's doing better, and that his delirium was immensely better. She was released last week and is glad to be home, but John is bored with only the 4 walls of the room, TV and newspapers. She says he's got to be patient, something he's not good at!
Hopefully we'll see him back on here soon, and he can sort out his side of the story of his capture by pirates....

Sounds like John is on the way to recovery and hopefully maybe home soon. Like a lot of members here I miss him and his posts.....always bring a smile to my face.

Rosie just messaged that John will be coming home tomorrow! At ~10pm Monday here it's ~3pm Tuesday in New Zealand, so he'll be home on their Wednesday, sometime after late afternoon Tuesday September 19th here.Woo Hoo!!

Rosie says that John did get home Wednesday, is recuperating and spent most of the day yesterday weeding his garden (headed into spring there) and wandering around the place with his walker. He's not been near the computer yet as it's upstairs, so it may be a few more days before we hear from him. Sounds like they're doing well.

Nearly six weeks back I ate my tea, stepped out onto the deck to scrape my plate for the birds, turned to come back indoors, and my left knee folded.
I hit the concrete deck hard.
Did serious damage to my left hip, pelvis, left knee, and hit my head with a helluva crack.
She called the ambulance.
Taranaki Base Hospital.
Kept unconscious for two weeks with 24 hr supervision.
In my more lucid moments I traversed all over New Zealand in my mind.
Even got into a fight in Nelson.
I was told later that they were my security guards.
And it sems it was quite a serious punch-up as they tried to sedate me.
It took four of them.
They stopped the doping after two weeks.
I gradually came back from La-la land.
Still not thinking too straight even now, the brain took a helluva crack.
Start talking and lose words.
Can't remember basic things, can't always find a cup to make me a coffee.
Or where the sugar bowl is.
On the bench where it always is.
I know that but the mind just goes blank.
Getting better mentally daily.
But an hour on the pooter gets my mind wobbly.
Body is still in a helluva state though.
Gotta have a little four-wheel trolley thing to lean on to get me around.
Gotta sit down to have a pee, would fall over again otherwise.

But I'm still alive so that's all good.

Glad you are still with us and you are doing better. My mom hit her head a couple of years ago and she struggled hard to communicate. The words wouldn't come to her mouth, but she knew what she wanted to say. She's OK now and you will be too with time.

John it's so good to see you back, hang in there and do what you can WHEN you can.

It felt so good to see your post come up! Can't say it was pleasant reading but I'm glad you ( and the missus ) are on the mend still. You're home and moving about and that is huge! Give us an update when you're able.

Glad to see you up and moving again. Scrambled eggs for brains aren’t fun, I know the feeling. Take your time and enjoy your day, things will get better and easier as they go on. And if you need to walk back into a room to remember why or what you’re looking for don’t worry about it. Even those who haven’t had some of these problems are walking back into that room too. Some just won’t admit it.
Now go get some ice cream go sit down outside and enjoy the day…joe

You're bang on the mark there; this is my road and I'm the only one that can walk it.
But it's encouraging to know that there are people alongside cheering me on.

I'm determined I won't be beaten. Just out of hospital the other day and I put another four or five buckets full of compost into the cutdown 44 gallon drum I grow my potatoes in, filled the bucket, put them on my walkabout thing's seat and pushed them one at a time over to my taties.

Been cheering for you all along, been a bit under the weather myself these past couple of weeks, but following along with this thread.
As I told you a couple of years ago, I have a real soft spot for farmers and if I say so myself, you're one hell of a good bloke.
