Looking to buy a 1934 Chevy in WI and want to register it in New York what problems might I be facing. I know that registering a Cobra replicia in NY can be a pain. If the WI car has a title for a1937 will NY except it. If it's sold on a registration and bill of sale will I be able to get it registered. It's A fiber glass car. Thanks

Since not many of us live in New York, I doubt we know their rules. But a visit to the DMV online should provide you the answers I would think.

If they are anything like Massachusetts, it'll be a bear to get through.

Check out the SEMA pages for registration help. Click NY on the map and you'll find 30 pages of info. Many states have gotten much more strict about titling and registration, especially with fiberglass bodied cars and in some cases have rejected another states title when an obvious home built vehicle is titled as if old iron. You'd be wise to do your homework before buying, IMO -

Your kidding or this is a typo right???

A title for a 37 is NOT the title for a 34 and will not prove ownership.

Cars transferred on a bill of sale and registration are only acceptable if the state it's being transferred from transfers title in that manner.....and believe me NY DMV will check and see if WI is a title state.

From personal experience straightening out a title can be a huge PIA and some times a very expensive one.....even more so depending on how the state your titling it in treats "home built cars".

I've ended up with a few cars over the years that have had title problems (a couple I knew about going into the deal). On the ones I knew about my rule of thumb has been not to spend more on the car than I was comfortable losing if the problems could not be overcome. Best case is you end up with a car and having to resale to someone in a state that has more favorable titling laws or it it ends up being parted out.....losing money in either situation......the worst case is the State impounds the car.

One option that you could possibly explore would be a bonded title but those rules also vary state to state.

I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....
